• QWK Reader for Mac OS (pre-OS X)

From Otto Reverse@21:2/154 to All on Fri Nov 18 03:29:00 2022

    Hi,

I've found a couple of QWK mail offline readers for Mac OS but they are
old shareware/crippleware with contact info that is now defunct. The
two programs are Alice and TIMM.

Does anyone else use them and have a serial or even better, current
    author contact info?

    Cheers,
    Otto

I don't use a Mac, but the best current QWK reader that I know of (and
use) is called MultiMail. It has a Mac version.

Yes I've used that. But it is for newer versions of OS X. I'm looking
for something to run on older pre-OS X Mac OS. There's a couple out
there I've found but they are crippleware and of course the authors
aren't around anymore (that I can find any).

If you need just the Alice 2.4 -> 2.4.2 update, download the update file instead of this archive.
This release of Alice includes new documentation and numerous PICTs
detailing BlueWave, .XRS, and .QWK offline FidoNet setups. This archive is
the *complete* Alice 2.4.2 release, with T2, and a separate guide on using Charon or F1 with Alice.
Alice can function either as an offline .QWK, .XRS, or BlueWave FidoNet
mail reader, or Alice may be combined with Charon and ZipIt to form a
seamless FidoNet point setup for the Macintosh platform. Alice is
    shareware

    Multimail is OS X only.

I thought it was also available for Windows and other platforms.. I looked it up online and I see downloads here for MS-DOS, OS/2, Windows, and Mac OS:

I s'pose that begs the question, what does reg get you with alice? Is it crippled or does it expire without it? Or does it mostly function and get you some bonus features?

That's a good question. TIMM is clear, it starts to cripple important features. But the Alice doc just says you have to register in 30 days.
It doesn't say what, if anything, happens after 30 days. I guess I will
    find out!

In dem good ol' days, a lot of shareware didn't cripple, it just gave you a time frame and then relied on your good graces to pay the fee. On a slightly different note, often early versions of the same software wouldn't be
crippled although it may not be quite as fully featured. So if E looks good
but becomes crippled it might be worth looking at a few versions earlier.

Just for fun, no idea if you've seen this...

So I can't download a QWK packet. It fails during the "building qwk packet" phase and it seems to fail at the same spot. I tried first on my old Mac then on a PC with NetRunner. As it is going through the various areas, when it reaches:

    Test New Node (478 / 501)

    the connection is immediately terminated.

Works with no problems. One suggestion though, the packet name was odd
and looked random. It should be something like xibalba.qwk and not
change each session as many (most?) qwk readers get set up to look for a specific filename per BBS.

A more reasonable filename makes sense. I need to go back and check my notes/etc. to see why I did that?! :D

Theres the remote chance its the default. Most software comes with some kind
