I have made some small tweaks to the naming of some of the echomail areas.

Nothing major, just small changes, mostly removing the odd word or two like 'chat' from some titles.

fidonet in general sucks. there's almost never anything worth responding to there. nobody seems to be interested in, well, anything whatsoever if you
look at how many basically empty echos there are. i'm not sure every bbs on the nodelist has even sent echomail. they're very proud they can remember every minute detail of ftn configuration.

I think if you curate a list of echos that are relevant and interesting and trim away everything else, it can be cool. That's how I have it set up.

Well, that's your opinion anyway. Some may disagree with that.

responding to there. nobody seems to be interested in, well,
anything whatsoever if you look at how many basically empty echos

Sounds like you need to refine your list of echos a little. I can find
plenty of things responding to there. Sure, there are plenty of empty
echos, but also those with decent traffic.

i'm not sure every bbs on the nodelist has even sent echomail.

What does that have to do with anything? There's more to an FTN than echomail.

they're very proud they can remember every minute detail of ftn configuration.

Well, it can be a complicated thing. Are you not "proud" of being able
to do some difficult things? What's wrong with that?

Expand "in there". What echo areas are you personally hoping
to see active, assuming you are interested in those topics?

Between [1] several of the general chat areas: eg. CHAT,
    COFFEE_KLATSCH, ASIAN_LINK, CANACHAT, ANYTHING_GOES, etc..
and, [2] some of the more specific ones: MOVIES, MUSIC,
COOKING, WEATHER, HOME_N_GRDN, CATSMEOW, AUDIO, ESSNASA, EARTH,
CONSPRCY, etc.. and [3] the plethora of computer-related
    areas: eg. PUBLIC_KEY, WINDOWS, OS2, INTERNET, FUTURE4FIDO,
    MOBILE, TUXPOWER, CYBER_DANGER, etc.. what's missing? ;)

Some of this is true, but theres more than just echomail, I've made many friendships over Netmail.

There are a few folks in the 2: zone that have been using (learning) Fidonet their entire lives and if you were to drop a comma, they're sure to point it out, over and over and over again.

Life is too short for this nonsense.
