Nonono don't run as root. Run this command;
sudo setcap 'cap_net_bind_service=+ep' /mystic/mis
You'll have to run it every time you upgrade mis
That's a good option too. I did that with bbbsd so I can start it without needing root or sudo.

I think it's safe to run sudo ./mis, although I wouldn't run it as
root.

That works too, though could be annoying with the high frequency of
Mystic upgrades when g00r00's on a roll (like now). :) I use this
method for SBBS, but not Mystic.

Yep, I'm pretty sure I did that for bbbsd and tested it but still use
sudo out of habit. :)
Happy New Year to you.

Haha I could add it to my Mystic upgrade script, which does the donkey work of copying the executables and taking backups, before handing
things back to me for the manual tweaks of each specific upgrade. That would make it automatic, and then I could change my Mystic startups. No biggie though.

This caused dosemu problems for me.
I ended up just giving my bbs linux user permission to bind to privileged ports.

I'm curious - what do you actually back up? And have you tested a full restore/rollback?
I'd like to script this with rsync and avoid copying certain things
(like my /mystic/doors directory, or /mystic/files, for example).

With the setcap command, or do you do it some other way?

I backup everything in the Mystic directory

My idea is if the SD card goes bad, I'm most likely to lose the lot.

Ah, gotcha. Yeah. That's the easier option insofar as writing a backup script for sure, but in my case, would result in a lot of duplication
of things I don't need to duplicate.
In my case, I'm running in a VM with snapshots (digitalocean) so it's
less a case of a compromised file system/hardware and more a case of a botched upgrade. So I'm primarily interested in backing up specifically "mystic" things (data directories, binaries, etc).

It means you're not starting mis as root. You should be starting MIS as
