Just wondering if there are any docs on how to setup a QWK node? So far what I've tried isn't working. When I run a qwkpoll it gets to the "Downloading QWK packet" then give a "Unable to open data connection". I've downloaded a packet manually and it looks like there is mail in it but I must not have a message base setup for them yet as it doesn't
import anything. But for now I would just like it to actually download the vert.qwk file.

Did you go to vert and set up your selected conferences? You'll also have to reset the lastread pointers on vert so that there will be new messages to
    pull.

Unfortunately, the logging for QWKPOLL as a whole needs to be improved, but the error information seems detailed enough for me to know whats
    going on.

Speaking of QWKPOLL, you reminded me of a question I had earlier.

Can you pull a QWK network as a node (ie: Dovenet) and then serve it up to others via FTN?

I remember talking about this way back, but don't know what ever happened
with it. I pull Dovenet from Vertrauen and then feed it to a few links in
which their BBS software doesn't support QWK networking.

I'd like to keep this service going for the people that have been using it
for years, but didn't want to set it up until I asked, which I forgot for
    about a month now. ;)

    Regards,
    Nick

I had the login all setup already at dove.synchro.net and had answered
yes to the qwk network. I did make the changes in the options that that page suggested. When I use qwkpoll to connect it gives me this:

    - Exchanging Mail for DOVE-Net
    - Exported @vert.rep -> 0 msgs
    - Connecting via FTP to dove.synchro.net
    - Connected
    - Logged in as TBB-BBS
    - Downloading QWK packet
    - Unable to open data connection

Not sure why it can't open the data connection. Is there any way to get more debugging output?

That happens to me too sometimes. I think that qwkpoll times out when it
can't find the qwk file to download. But it may take some time for vert to compile and zip the qwk packets and it may take longer than what qwkpoll
waits for. I usually just run qwkpoll again and the next time, it works.

You also have to have your message bases setup already. Mystic won't autocreate them like it does for FTN message bases.

I think it doesn't really work, but its been a long time since I looked at it. I'll make a note to set up a test for it. I think it worked as long as you were a hub on both networks but I really can't remember where we left off with it.

All of the QWK stuff needs to get an overhaul soon.

I'm not sure about the debugging method on Mystic, as I use Synchronet but one thing I would check is the firewall setting if you're using one.

Do a normal FTP login using an ftp client and see. I'm not sure Mystic has a built in ftp client or not.

Did all that and I can manually download the vert packet using the standard
ftp program in linux using either passive or active. I haven't checked
qwkpoll this morning to know if anything has changed but I doubt it.

Yes, this is a firewall issue for sure. Non passive means the server actually connects to your system on a port when it comes time to transfer data. Almost no system will ever work out of the box with non-passive mode when you're the client, which is why Passive exists. Non-passive is seriously from 1985, long before desktop firewalls were even a thing.

This is because there is not a QWK packet for you, as it sounds like you know. Mystic is working, you just need to reset your last read pointer date on Vert so it makes you a packet or wait for DoveNet to have some new mail for you.

If you change to passive on your system, you need to change it to passive on vert as well.

Also, you can change your last-read pointers on vert to gather as many
messages as you want in each conference. You can set the pointer by number
of messages or by date. Once those pointers are set on vert, try running qwkpoll again.

That may not be the entire case here. I logged in to my QWK account on Vert
and reset the pointers so that I would get some past messages. Saved and
exited Vert. Logged in via FTP to Vert to verify the .qwk file existed:

    -r--r--r-- 1 vert vert 10240 Dec 23 13:17 vert.qwk

Exited the FTP session with Vert. I then executed "qwkpoll all" and got the same response:

    - Connecting via FTP to vert.synchro.net

It has been awhile since I ran SBBS as a BBS. But is vert.qwk the actual filename that Mystic (qwkpoll) is expecting to see? It would seem more
logical if the qwk filename were named based on the qwk account being used. In my case that would be "ouijabrd". Just pondering different possibilities.

I also noticed the size of the vert.qwk file that was packed based on my updated last read pointers was much larger than the file size of the vert.qwk file that was visible when I logged in to Vert via FTP.

Since vert is your hub, you have to download its file, which is vert. If you don't have it configured with vert as the filename, then you won't ever find the file to download.

I also noticed the size of the vert.qwk file that was packed based on my updated last read pointers was much larger than the file size of the vert.qwk file that was visible when I logged in to Vert via FTP.

You have to realize that the vert.qwk file is just a pointer and not an
actual file. The ftp act of 'get vert.qwk' runs a process that extracts and zips the messages. The messages don't get collected until you run the get vert.qwk command; they're not just waiting around for you to collect them.
