• qwk transfer issue

From Nigel Reed@1:103/705 to GitLab issue in main/sbbs on Sun Aug 4 19:35:32 2024

A user has noted that when they try to transfer a QWK packet, it displays the menu for selecting a protocol but always automatically fills in the default and doesn't allow them to change it. This is a bit confusing for the user so they reported it as a bug.

I tend to agree there is no point in displaying the menu to pick a protocol if they're not going to be able to pick a protocol.

Not sure if this is by design or not so thought I'd seek some clarity as to what's supposed to happen

It's by design. The user has chosen their default file transfer protocol ('Z' apparently in this case). Have them disable their default file transfer protocol if they don't want it to be automatically selected like this.

Sounds like he is saying that they are not able to change it to a different protocol here. I know I am able to change it as I sometimes accidentally
hit "X" instead of "Z" or just ENTER here to select my default (Zmodem).

Yup, and each user has the option (in their user settings on the BBS) of having a default protocol or not. This user, it sounds like, does have a default download protocol set.

Right, it just doesn't make sense to show them a list of protocols and automatically select theirs...just go to the download?

One could argue, now the user knows which protocol was (auto) selected. If it's a manually-started transfer protocols (as many/most of them are), then the user is reminded which protocol driver to start on their end.

I suppose alternatively, the BBS could just display "Starting <protocol name> file transfer...". For a long time, there was no "protocol name" (just command a key and set of command-lines), but since there is now, that's a viable alternative design. If you want to submit a feature request, I'll consider it.

I think that would be preferred. I can see why a user would wonder why it's showing a list of protocols they can select from but it already selects one for them. I'm sure it doesn't come to mind they have a default set already.
