It's by design. The user has chosen their default file transfer protocol ('Z' apparently in this case). Have them disable their default file transfer protocol if they don't want it to be automatically selected like this.

Sounds like he is saying that they are not able to change it to a different protocol here. I know I am able to change it as I sometimes accidentally hit "X" instead of "Z" or just ENTER here to select my default (Zmodem).

of having a default protocol or not. This user, it sounds like, does

Right, it just doesn't make sense to show them a list of protocols and automatically select theirs...just go to the download?
I suppose alternatively, the BBS could just display "Starting <protocol name> file transfer...". For a long time, there was no "protocol name" (just command a key and set of command-lines), but since there is now, that's a viable alternative design. If you want to submit a feature request, I'll consider it.
