  • COM (Win32) sucks super hard

    I'm curious, any of you greybeards know anything about COM (Component Object Model) in Windows?

    I'm a pretty young/fresh developer (25yo) and I'm mostly familiar with more modern languages and frameworks; web dev with AngularJS and desktop dev with C# (WPF/UWP/Unity3D).

    COM is... practically an alien language. I've been working with it for about 18 months now and I'm a lot more capable, but jesus christ, how did you guys get anything done with this stuff? It's so arcane and full of quirky little gotchas that aren't documented well at all.

    I struggled hard when I first came across it. I'm a lot more comfortable now but I can't imagine being a dev for it with only reference books for help. Praise be unto Google.

    Anyone with actual fond feelings towards COM?

    Out of topic, but I have to say it... What do you mean greybeards? Yes, I'm almost 46, and yes, my beard is grey, but it also has other colors in it including white, red, brown, and blonde. I have a feeling this is a new way of calling us "older" people, OLD!!!

    Lmao, no offence meant. I work with developers in their 60s who use the title of greybeard with pride, referring more to their experience and "wizardly" ways, heh heh.
