I have golded running on linux, but F1 doesn't work (it behaves like
the ESC key).
Also I can't select text using shift + arrow keys. Is it even
possible to get this working in linux?

Mine behaves fine. I don't remember if I had to do anything special to
get it to behave like this. I don't think so. It might have to do with your terminal and its settings.
I didn't know about Alt-A, thanks! That seems to work in my putty-golded combo :)Also I can't select text using shift + arrow keys. Is it even

It works in my current terminal (Konsole in KDE on opensuse). But not
when I login remotely to my machine with putty as terminal from a
windows machine. So I got my self used to using Alt-A for text
selection in Golded...

I use putty from windows, but in Midnight Commander for example, all function key work just fine. I guess it's not the terminal settings then?
