If the option for joining wasn't there, it would be like advertising the Grand Opening of a shop everywhere, then when people show up having a sign saying "By appointment Only"

This is also true, but there is one difference. An open group is periodically visited by spambots. We need 2-3 moderators in the group to them all. And still, this will not rid Fido completely of spam.

It is enough to activate the *white* and *black* lists in the group. After that, it is quite possible to make it even open. SPAM will not leak into Fido for sure and moderators will gradually clear it out of the group.

While such sheets are not supported, but I'm almost ready to implement it. In the fidonet.online group, moderators completely cope with spammers and almost no spam gets to Fido.
