    Hello, All!

    Dear Fidonet syops!

I am looking for a brave person in the EU with a modem, who could make 2-3 calls to the number +35220707188 and check whether they are able to CONNECT or not. I thank you in advance and am ready to cover all expenses.

    Best regards,
    dp.

I've had a small modem collection for some time but always wanted to put it to use, rather than just have it take up space on my shelves.
Recently, encouraged by modem enthusiasts from 5020, I finally connected everything together.

Here's the current list of different modems with various chipsets:

    Motorola Codex 3256
Zyxel U-336E (died 3 days ago. RIP! Will be replaced by U-336S model). IDC-5614BXL/VR
    Genius TP560
    Tainet T-336C
    Multitech MT2834BLI
    ZyXEL Omni 56K USB Plus
    USR Courier 56k
    Wavecom Q2303A (GSM)
Huawei E171 (GSM) (will be replaced by Siemens MC35i)

The USR Courier is connected to a GPON box, the ZyXEL Omni 56K to a Linksys SPA3192 (SIP), and the rest are connected to an Audiocodes MP-124 (SIP). All the modems are controlled my mgetty/qico from Linux on Intel N3350 box via a Branboxes 8-port USB-COM converter (except for the ZyXEL Omni 56K USB Plus).

The SIP gateways are registered on a local Asterisk server, which is connected to various SIP providers. It's also open to calls from any SIP gateway on the internet (901-909 numbers on voip.fidonet.cc).

The +352 number is from the company where I work part-time and is routed via SIP to my Asterisk server.
Now I am fixing BBS software and going to add another USR Courier for SIP calls.

I also had an idea to put an ancient Racal Vadic modem from around 1985 online with the original Fido v10 software from Jennings (it supports native non-Hayes commands on the RV modem), but I'm a bit worried it might fail if run in 24/7 mode.

    Best regards,
    dp.

    Very nice!

I thought I recognized the mgetty greeting there. =)

(By the way, do you know if there is any way to create "virtual" mgetty users, e.g. that "zork" and "quit" don't have to be actual user accounts on the machine, but could be routed to another single user account, e.g. "bbs"? I don't think I found anything in the mgetty docs, but I could have missed something...)

    Very nice collection!

I have a ZyXEL U-336S that I bought from a computer shop in Moscow (by way of an online broker) a couple of years ago, which I hope to put online in the future.

    Here is my current configuration:

    /etc/mgetty/login.config

    /FIDO/ uucp news /opt/fido/sbin/qico -a emsi @
    bbs - - /usr/bin/telnet -8 127.0.0.1 8088

    quit - - /usr/bin/false

    # Don't allow local logins:
    * nobody @ /bin/false

    -+-

bbs, zork and quit - are all virtual, they don't exist in /etc/passwd.
The last line is required to restict all local users from logging in via mgetty.

Thanks a lot! I re-read the instructions and noticed now that only "userid" (the second argument), if specified, needs to be a valid user. Very nice!

The last line is required to restict all local users from logging in via mgetty.

Thanks! Yep, that's an important one to avoid potential mishaps.

Speaking of access, I've been preparing a little for PPP support (mainly PAP, as it can use user credentials from /etc/passwd etc. out of the box), but haven't tried it yet. Equally important to lock down undesired accounts there. :)

    It's quite complex to get /etc/ppp/options, /etc/ppp/options.<modem

Very nice looking modem, it was my dream ~30 year ago to get it ;)

I always liked the ZyXELs, and I believe they were very common particularly in Germany and Russia, from what I recall. Lots of features and very good also for faxing, voice and ISDN (depending on model). Never had one back then, though...

Just before COVID I visited their main office in Taiwan to take a selfie, but they don't have a museum or anything like that.
