• High ASCII in Fidonet

From Sean Dennis@1:18/200 to All on Mon Oct 21 00:20:47 2019
    Hello All.

From a moderator of 14 Fidonet echoes, please don't use high ASCII in an echo unless it's specifically allowed. There's still a lot of systems out there that don't like that particular set of characters. Just some friendly advice.

    Later,
    Sean

I'd say please don't use high ascii without CHRS kludge.

I'd say: please don't use high ascii without *correct* CHRS kludge! ;)

I just let something for you to correct. ;)

I say "high ASCII" is misnomer. There is no such thing. What we do see in Fidonet are "extended character sets". See FTS-5003.

I'd say: please don't use high ascii without *correct* CHRS kludge! ;)

    See above. ;-)

    Cheers, Michiel

    Hi Tommi,

I'd say please don't use high ascii without CHRS kludge.

There's a lot of software that doesn't recognize the CHRS kludge so my advice is to avoid it period unless the echo specifically allows it. The BBS software I run does recognize high ASCII without the use of the CHRS kludge but I have nearly all of my echoes set up to strip the high-bit stuff (this echo being an exception).

I personally just find it annoying except in BBS ads and the like. The same with multiple-line signatures. That might be fine in email but that annoys me in echo and netmail. :D

There is also plenty of software that DOES recognise it. Has been for decades.

so my advice is to avoid it period unless the echo specifically allows
    it.

Your advice is ignored. A seven bit characterset like ASCII is too lean to have everyone in Fidonet properly express themselves. In most western European languages the accents and umlauts are indispensible for properly writing non trivial messages. Plus that the vast majority of messages are written in Cyrillic these days.

I personally just find it annoying except in BBS ads and the like.

    You are too easily annoyed.

Sorry Sean, the days that the ASCII only cult could impose their will on the rest of Fidonet are long gone. They are now a tiny majority. Live with it.

    Cheers, Michiel
