Hello!

Would a few people here please try a telnet connection to
trmb.ca:23 please. It is Rusty Mailbox BBS.

All my attempts are failing. Just wondering if others are
having the same issue.

This is what has been reported to me but I don't know why.

Do you know if that error is reported from your client or if it is a reply from my terminal server? I need to fix that if it is a local problem here.

I can connect to trmb.ca:513 without issue though.

This is also what I have found, and I don't understand if my terminal server will answer rlogin, why not telnet.

This is what has been reported to me but I don't know why.

Do you know if that error is reported from your client or if it is a
reply frommy terminal server? I need to fix that if it is a local
problem here.

I just tried from the built in windows telnet client and received the same message, last time I was using SyncTerm so I believe it's coming from your side.

I can connect to trmb.ca:513 without issue though.

This is also what I have found, and I don't understand if my terminal serverwill answer rlogin, why not telnet.

I am able to telnet and RLogin to port 513, so that part seems to be working.

It looks like you are not getting any answer on the telnet port?

You are the forth person to get this same result. I need to fix this but I don't know the cause.

The telnet service here is enabled. I am telnetting in right now (from within my own network). When I go to canyouseeme.org or the Synchronet port check page they see my telnet and other ports open.

I'm looking for the solution but I don't know what the problem may be.

I was now able to connect to Telnet & SSH no problem. I wasn't able to connect to RLogin, but this was from my work which sometimes does funky things, so could be my end.

That string is transmitted when somebody connects to that address on telnet.

When I go to canyouseeme.org or the Synchronet

That is because the telnet port IS open, and you get the string quoted above.

Even though the BBS has moved to another port, the message is still displayed. I can't find anything in sbbs that displays this message. Maybe something is already listening on port 23, the router is redirecting somewhere else or the ISP is interfering.

What if you redirect port 23 on the router to port 2030 on the server?

It is a bad idea today but I do have ssh for those that can use it. The website is also secure along with the web telnet service.

There are some who still use and prefer telnet so I make that available but we do have secure protocols available for folks to use. ssh is a good option today and works with the BBS including doors and file transfers.

Yes, I am with TekSavvy and I am using a modem they provide.

I can disable the telnet server in the setup but calls coming in on telnet and ssh are still being blocked for some reason. I'm going to have to use non standard ports until I can find a way to clear that blockage.

Same here, remote unexpectedly closed connection.

I use a command like this to use ssh.

ssh al@trmb.ca -p 2022

If you use an unrecognized name it will take you through the new user process.

It's possible to login as guest@trmb.ca and just make up a password. The BBS will again ask you for a password so just press enter and it will log you in as guest after asking a few questions.

A guest can look at and read just about everything but can't play games or post/reply in most areas.

This looks like your ISP is blocking, other IPs on the same subnet also give the same error. You should maybe talk to them about getting port 23 opened up.

If the ISP was blocking port 23 would they display that message?

That might be. It seems more likely to me that there is a server in the router answering. I get the same behaviour on port 22 and there is also a server on that port. I don't know why they would do that. Those servers (if that is what is is) are useless and just block me from using port 22 or 23. I access the setup on that router with a webpage that doesn't interfere with the web server. I wish they would have left it at that but that is my situation.

I am going to bring this up with my ISP at some point along with another issue that needs to be brought up.

I hope I can chat with somebody who understands what I am talking about.
