On October 22, 2021, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer
(MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image
centered on King Sound, Western Australia. This magnificent gulf, which
measures roughly 75 miles (120 km) long, is a notable landmark on the
northwestern coast of Australia. The King Sound has the highest tides
in all of Australia, and the second highest in the world. Only the Bay
of Fundy, Canada, has higher tides.

The head of the Sound receives water and sediment from the Fitzroy
River, one of Australia’s largest rivers. Several other rivers flow
into the King Sound, including the Lennar, Meda, Robinson, and May
Rivers. The large brown smudge at the head of the sound is created from
sediment pouring from the rivers into the Sound as well as from mud
churned up from the bottom by the strong tides.
