From faeychild@2:250/1 to All on Sun Jul 12 09:09:42 2020

Tonight I am getting error from kdenlive about an unsupported codec

    "Unsupported video codec: libx264"

    Yesterday all was fine.
Today there was an update which included a new ffmpeg v 4.1.6.

Kdenlive uses MLT which probably uses ffmpeg for libx264

    ffmpeg
ffmpeg version 4.1.6 Copyright (c) 2000-2020 the FFmpeg developers
built with gcc 8.4.0 (Mageia 8.4.0-1.mga7)
    configuration: --prefix=/usr --enable-shared --enable-pic --libdir=/usr/lib64 --shlibdir=/usr/lib64 --incdir=/usr/include --disable-stripping --enable-postproc --enable-gpl --enable-pthreads --enable-libtheora --enable-libvorbis --disable-encoder=vorbis
    --enable-libvpx --enable-runtime-cpudetect --enable-libaom
    --enable-libdc1394 --enable-librtmp --enable-libspeex
    --enable-libfreetype --enable-libgsm --enable-libcelt --enable-libopus --enable-libopencv --enable-libopenjpeg --enable-libtwolame
    --enable-libxavs --enable-frei0r --enable-libmodplug --enable-libass --enable-gnutls --enable-libcdio --enable-libpulse --enable-libv4l2 --enable-avresample --enable-opencl --enable-libmp3lame --enable-sndio --enable-libdav1d --disable-decoder=aac --disable-encoder=aac
    libavutil 56. 22.100 / 56. 22.100
    libavcodec 58. 35.100 / 58. 35.100
    libavformat 58. 20.100 / 58. 20.100
    libavdevice 58. 5.100 / 58. 5.100
    libavfilter 7. 40.101 / 7. 40.101
    libavresample 4. 0. 0 / 4. 0. 0
    libswscale 5. 3.100 / 5. 3.100
    libswresample 3. 3.100 / 3. 3.100
    libpostproc 55. 3.100 / 55. 3.100

I see no mention of libx264 in the update version.

ffmpeg is required to be the tainted version and I suspect that this not it.

This could all be coincidental but it is a bit suspicious.

I have "tainted" selected in the media list.
MCC lists no tainted version of ffmpeg in the repository list. It used to.
Has there been some policy change?

    regards

You might post on the dev mail list that maybe someone needs to do
    a 4.1.6 tainted update/release.

That would require a new career move, Bits. Spending a large part of
the night finding out just how to do that..

PS that is an interesting command esp the second grep piped to java.
    That lost me!! :-)

When the latest ffmpeg update was pushed, the tainted version was
mistakenly not sent with it. The situation should be corrected soon.

That has been my recent consideration.
I was just unlucky to blunder in to it

Video rendering will have to stand by

That is not a java pipe.

I have a nightly cron job using
    wget --tries=2 --timeout=10 --no-remove-listing
to pull web page contents from http(mirror_of_choice_here)/mageia/distrib/7.1/x86_64/media/
    [core/, nonfree/, tainted/, (relase, update)]
and convert each into an ASCII text .idx file.

The grep ^ffmpeg command said to find any lines starting with ffmpeg
That way I do not get all the libxxxffmpeg rpm files.

The second grep -v says to ignore the following extended-regexp (E)
quoted strings having 32_ text OR text with java in the line.

PS that is an interesting command esp the second grep piped to java.

No, it is not piped to java. Unfortunately the symbol | has many
meanings. Two of relevance here are a) the pipe symbol in
bash/csh/ksh/... , and b) the "or" in a regular expression. The
"32|java" is in quotes, and is part of the argument of grep It means
"find sentences which do not (-v) contain either the string 32_ or the string java."
The -E option says to interpret the argument as an extended regular
expression. (This essentially converts the grep into an egrep.)

Note that he told you how to do "that" . You do not have to spend the whole night doing that, unless you include that part of the night when you
    were asleep.

Anyway, you know that cauldron is buggy. It is supposed to be buggy. If
it were not it would be called Mageia 8 not Mageia cauldron. All Bit is
saying is to report that the tainted version is not included in the
    current cauldron, presumable by error.

Note also that ffmpeg-4.3.1-2.mga8.tainted.x86_64.rpm is there in
cauldron. You presumably caught your mirror while some things were being updated. That is another "problem" with using cauldron. If you run into something not there in a cauldron update, do another update to see if it
    has since reappeared.

Had you paid attention to the idx file names or rpm names you might
have noticed it was about release 7, not 8.

Also. OP's signature file indicates release 7. :)

Not really. I suggested the Dev list to get a packager's attention
without having to open a bug report. If after a day or two, I would
    open a bug report.

It is kinda like Usenet. and the dev mail list is just a group like alt.os.linux.mageia. Instead of looking via Usenet, it is done vial Email.
Do go back and take a look at some of the messages/threads at
    https://ml.mageia.org/l/arc/dev
to see if you really want the eamil traffic.

The dev maillist is usually for Developers helping other developers/Packagers. I only post there when I want to know if they want a problem report
or a little time to work the problem.

I wait a few days as TJ inferred.

Yep, I saw that David had posted your problem to the sysadmain maillist
which should get the problem to someone's attention.

If not, your registration login id/pw will allow you to open bug reports.
Does not hurt to check at https://bugs.mageia.org/buglist.cgi?component=RPM%20Packages&product=Mageia&res olution=---
to see if a bug is not already open.

Kdenlive uses MLT which probably uses ffmpeg for libx264

Kdenlive does screw up its configuration files occasionally for no good reason.

I believe that if your are encoding h264 video most of the "video"
programs in Linux use "ffmpeg tainted" because it contains the codec.

And when kdenlive fell over with that complaint and it coincided with
the update of ffmpeg which was not the tainted version, the clues fell
    into place.

But to be sure I can pull all the kdenlive config files and check it
out, but I am currently recording so it will have to wait

I don't have an FFmpeg in the tainted showing in the package manager,
other codecs are normal and tainted versions. I don't recall if I was
using FFmpeg tainted version in the first place. It's difficult to
remember everything, and too much hassle to create a list.

Go to the bug report, if you're happy to try what was suggested by the maintainer, then tainted FFmpeg does work, or wait a few days for it to
move from testing to the main tainted library.

It definitely used to be tainted. That is where the h.264 codec came from.
The update algorithm replaced the old tainted version with the new
    untainted version.
But the maintainers who need to know, now do, so I'll sit tight.

    OK I checked princeton

    /pub/mageia/distrib/7/x86_64/media/tainted/updates/ffmpeg-4.1.6-1.mga7.tainted. x86_64.rpm
    2020-07-07 18:04 1.6M

It is definitely there - One week old.??

I checked my mirror aarnet. It still has version 4.1.5 tainted Which was removed from my system and replaced with untainted version 4.1.6

    Well I'm baffled

I'll wait until the updates flow through

It was presumably created a week ago and transfered yest. via rsync,
which preserves mtime for the file. It has not been on princeton for a
    week.

Baffled by a week old date that hadn't flowed through on my last update

I used to but I started to get slow downloads due, I think , to
    submarine cable damage.
The rerouting via Mars Base Alpha was tedious.

But this morning the status page was a blaze with activity and I now
    have the tainted file.
    Kdenlive and I are happy.

thanks to all for the help

The tainted and core versions were created within a few minutes of each other, during
    the same build process.

Due to human error, the tainted version remained in the tainted updates testing repo
when the core version was moved from core updates testing to core updates, using
a semi-automated procedure. Fully automated move based on human produced input of
what's been approved to be moved.

Fixing such an error is a fully manual process that hasn't had to be used very often. Perhaps a dozen times in 9 years. It requires communication between a number of people, before it gets fixed, by moving the tainted updates testing version to tainted updates (srpm package and a number of rpm packages). Some recent changes in who does what made this and a similar recent case with vlc take longer to get fixed.

As the process of moving the packages from one repo to another does not change the
build date, the date of the package has little to do with when it appears in the
    repo.

The same thing happens with all packages that sit in qa testing for a long period,
either do to difficulty in testing (learning how to test rarely used packages), or
just due to the qa team being overloaded.
