But doesn't tautology mean repetition? To call something both
'digital' and 'television' gives two pieces of information, which
might be more than necessary because it's possible to infer one piece
of information from the other, but it's still two pieces of different information and therefore not repetition.

It's only all present day *broadcast* television that's digital (and
we can still talk about television history) and of course not
    everything digital is television.

not 100% digital as the audio fed to the loudspeakers is still

I was thinking more about digital loudspeakers like the range from
Meridian. (other manufacturers are available) Yes, they eventually
end with an analogue drive unit but they are still called digital
loudspeakers and they have a digital stream feeding the speaker box
not analogue. That's why it depends what you mean by a loudspeaker.

I think, as a uk.* group, there would first have to be a request for
discussion (RFD), describing and giving reasons for the proposed name
change, posted to the group uk.net.news.management, followed by a call
for votes (CFV). Then if a majority voted for a change in name it would
    happen.

Even then, as you say, the old name would be likely to survive as a
"zombie" group on many news servers. Seeing that at least 50% of the
posts here aren't about TV - and many aren't even about tech - it would
seem pretty pointless to try to change the name.

You could design digital circuits using valves though, I'm assuming Colossus was like this as it appears to have lots of bistables using valves in it,
Most of the valves stick out the sides as I recall.
One of the problems with Usenet has always been that you needed to be an
in person to create one on the main backbone and there was no way to delete
it afterwards, which is why you can still see some odd named ones, but not write to them.
