    Never mind.

It's been back for a week or so. Initially it was an un-named channel , identified only by its SID, but then it acquired the name "BBC Three" (as opposed to "BBC THREE" on Freeview, the same distinction as for BBC One, Two and Four or ONE, TWO and FOUR). This change occurred a couple of days before the 1 February re-launch of the channel on broadcast (as opposed to
    internet) media.

I suspect that a large proportion of BBC1 viewers might be getting a bit
fed up with all the premotion of BBC Three, considering that most will
be unlikely to watch it. The obsession with drag artists of BBC Three
    will not help.

The BBC has a strange view on things. I don't use iPlayer much, but
wanted to see the latest three-part BBC4 series "Britain's Lost
Masterpieces". On BBC4 in iPlayer only the latest one is there, so I
    thought I'd use "Search".

Entering "B", the first three programmes found are "Bing", "My Unique
B&B", and "Bad Education". Add an "R" and it changes to "Great British
Menu", "Mrs Brown's Boys", and "Ken Bruce". Add the "I", and it becomes
"Great British Menu", "Britney", and "The Bridge". Now add "T", and
you've got "Great British Menu", "Britney", and "Queer Britain". Add
another "A", and it's "Queer Britain", "Rip off Britain", and "Sex Map
of Britain". At this stage "Britain's Forgotten Men", "Britain's Best
Young Artist", and Britain's Lost Masterpieces" come 7th, 8th, and 9th
    on the list.

I wonder how the BBC arrive at the priority of search results in iPlayer.

I very much doubt that a human is sat there deciding rankings for everyone doing a search, so that would exclude any alleged prejudices. More likely
the programmes that have had the most downloads appear higher up, perhaps
with a weighting that decays with time from the download, would be the way I’d start. So basically popularity.

Strange. I've now seen 1 and 3. I'll get to 2 some time in the near future.

It's no doubt based on some sort of algorithm as you suggest, or not far
from it. What puzzled me was why programmes such as "Britney", "Queer
Britain", and "Sex Map of Britain" appeared so high on the list. Then
the penny dropped - they are BBC3 programmes, and until last week were
only available through streaming. The easiest way of finding them -
without the usual "Radio Times" type of programme guide - would perhaps
    have been through iPlayer.

The BBC *is* strange. I've just watched the second one and it was
signed; the first and third weren't. There's nothing like consistency!
