• Virgin Orbit to pause all operations

From Spike@21:1/5 to All on Thu Mar 16 09:03:27 2023
Virgin Orbit is to pause operations from Thursday in an apparent attempt to shore up its finances.

Almost all employees at the satellite launch company will reportedly also
    be furloughed.

Bosses told staff about the move at a meeting on Wednesday, saying a
further update would be provided next week.

It comes after the company's failure to launch the first ever satellite
mission from UK soil in January.

Its very difficult to get insurance for payloads on brand new launchers. I'd imagine they may already have several launchers either built for in
production, however customers will be very wary of trusting them if they
cannot get their money back if it fails.
Also of course they really should have done a shakedown launch with a dummy payload first.
If its that close to the mark on funding, then why did they start this in
    the first place?

Furloughed ! but presumably paid for by Virgin Corp, and not HM
    Guvvenment !

The Guvvenment only has money it has taken from taxpayers.

They'd already done five launches (one failed, four successful) before Cornwall, I doubt the location makes much difference?

Not good odds, do we know if it was the same point of failure? Restarting a rocket during its coast phase was always a challenge due to fuel slosh in
micro gravity. How do you pressurise the system in such a way that your fuel
    is at the extraction point?

Normally the first users of a launcher get a free launch or a cheaper launch. ESA lost the 4 Cluster satellites with the failed launch of Ariane 501. They didn't take the same risk and make the same mistake with Artemis communications satellite on a Japanese launcher which failed.

I always thought it was a US military thing - ie being on leave, or, at
    least, being on a 'jolly').

First launch of Ariane 5 Ariane 501 consisted of 4 ESA Cluster satellites and two commercial communication satellites total value 400 million
Second launch of Ariane 5 Ariane 502 consisted of a dummy satellite of typical mass and a student satellite. that was only a partial success too payload orbited in the wrong orbit.
