• DVI <-> HDMI

From David@21:1/5 to All on Mon Mar 6 12:33:04 2023
I have a monitor which has a DVI and DSUB connector.
    No HDMI.

I also have an HDMI<->DVI cable.
[I think this has worked in the past.]

I tried connecting the DVI to the monitor, and the HDMI to my Humax
    HB1000S.

    This didn't quite work.
A message on the monitor screen something about unsupported frequency of
    25 Hz.

Pending further testing with a computer with HDMI, would this be expected
to work or will this only work with the DVI end in a computer and the HDMI
    in a monitor?

    Cheers

That cable normally works both ways, however your monitor is being
snooty about the slow frame rate output from the Humax, which you need
    to raise?

It seems it is outputting interlaced (25Hz) video signals possibly to be compatible to whatever is connected to SCART.

Have a look for a Humax menu to change this. A quick google on HDMI and
that box suggest some folks also have had HDMI issues on various display
things and that needed firmware updates.

The other thing that kiboshes using a monitor with a HDMI output is lack
    of support for HDCP.

I think that the Humax detects/negotiates with the usual TV to decide on
    the frequency and resolution.
At least, it seems to display various values on the TV as it starts up and syncs up.

As to changing values on the Humax - chicken and egg.

I am (very) temporarily without a TV or HDMI monitor to display the
output, so I can't see the menus which would change any settings.

I was just playing pending the arrival of the new 4k TV.

    Cheers

Electrically they are the same for video (no audio in DVI) and just a cable, so should work bi-directionally.

Windows 7 - was that a Sci-Fi series decades ago or was that Blake's 7?

You need one of them there cheapo standard converter boxes powered from a
usb. They seem to work well, except that my one got blown up recently when
we haad a storm and now its stuck on the colour bars signal permanently. I don't really need it now, so I guess you put that down to experience.
