• [OT] Is this a computer-generated voice?

From Pamela@21:1/5 to All on Sun Feb 26 13:51:33 2023
This page has an audio version. Is it autogenerated?

The voice sounds robotic but some audio pronunciations (such as of
acronyms and headings) are more accurate than I would expect from
    autogenerated speech although not perfect.

Sounds like it, better than many others though.

It would be even more clever if it pronounced Menton correctly, i.e.
something like Mohn-tohn rather than Men-tun!

Try this, its one I did earlier in true Blue Peter Tradition.
This is one of the Microsoft Edge voices. https://www.dropbox.com/s/rs77zbyeml2shwy/Prunus-908-Ram-stick-player-and-radio-instructions-Feb-23.mp3?dl=1

Not inspiring as a file, but I had it ready.

The cadence is off in parts.

Sounds like a bored human who doesn't really understand (or care) what
    she is saying.

But that is the point. The one on that page sounds bored as well. I think we have a long way to go before we can get them to read audio books with true feelings. They can get the intonation by reading ahead to some extent, but
    they are never that inspiring.

Yes. The quality of the voice is damn good, compared with the likes of
Stephen Hawking's famous robotic voice, but the intonation, the rise and
fall in tone and the emphasis on the correct words is not quite right. Very close, but definitely voice synthesis. Alexa's voice is slightly better:
"she" seems to get emphasis and tonal variations better, but still clearly
    not a human.

It's hard to get one's brain around the fact that these voices are
completely synthesised from phonemes, and are not made up of a real voice saying all the standard words which are then pasted together in the right order.
