It is donkey's years since we last purchased a mattress and I had
forgotten what to look out for.

I started today with a visit to "Dreams" in Watford followed by surfing
the web. I am now more confused than ever.

    How many box springs?
    Are pocket box springs different?
Are micro springs better? Are they supplimental or complimentary?
How many GSM should I be looking for?

The problem is so many brands are not clear about these things.

    Any sleep specialists reading this?

    TIA

Errr.... whats mattresses got to do with UK digital Television?

Unless you actually have a bed that has one of these:

What worries me is that the online vendors like Emma etc, with their hi tech offer a sleep on it for 60 days and if you then return it you will get a refund. It actually never says what they do with returns, would you want a mattress that somebody has slept on for 60 days for your bed, when its
    supposed to be new.?
It is true however that most mattresses are only supposed to last 10 years. They give often lots of goodies on line like a free pillow and a 15 year guarantee, assuming its worth the paper its printed on. If its underwritten
by a company you know fine, but much like Double Glazing its not and if the company dies or winds up and restarts as a new name their liability ends.

I believe Dreams do flog a bed with a tv in it actually.
I long remember back in the analogue tv days, connecting the aerial cable
to the bed springs worked surprisingly well.

In which case, depending upon budget of course, going to long
established bed manufacturers like Vi-Spring might be a good idea - I
think they offer something like a 25 or 30 year warranty. But they're expensive.

There is something about somebody elses bed though. OK I know we do this in hotels and holiday lets etc, but still.

Hmm. Well, I'd have thought that to refurbish something like a mattress, you might as well make a new one.

I've led a sheltered life, quite obviously. Watching some film idly the
other night I was puzzled by a term Mattress Dancing, it was not until
later on when I heard the antics of the couple that I realised it meant sex.
    Ho hum.

Irrespective of the retail price, those foam mattresses are cheap enough
to the retailer that chucking away returns, or shredding them, is
economically attractive and is just part of the cost of the advertising
    and promotion.

I believe some just sell them on to resellers who sell them at much reduced prices as returns.
Would not be surprised if many airbnb or similar small guest house or
    hotels find them bargains

After all you can be pretty sure that most such places will be using
mattresses far older than 60 days
and used by multiple people some by the law of averages are going to be a
bit grubby or leak a bit.

Basically most of the 'features' are gimmiks and these mattresses
are horrible to sleep on. Many will also stink of latex etc.

Go to Ikea instead and you'll get a perfectly decent "normal" mattress
    for far less money.

    In my opinion.

Full replacement or money back in the first or maybe the second year if

In subsequent years it's a diminishing value credit note off their
RECOMMENDED selling price when you buy it direct from them at full
price. In year 3 a 50% off credit note to purchase from them based on
their full price is somewhat valueless if everywhere else has already discounted it to half price! In year 15 the credit note is likely to be
    5% off.

Why do you think that they keep repeating these adverts telling you that
the mattress is worth £500 but for the past couple of years it's always
    been on offer at £250.
