I have an Alexa unit in the bedroom and I use it to go to sleep whilst listening to Radio 4 Extra, because it is so boring. Every so often after
I have said 'Alexa Radio 4 Extra' and Alexa announces the programme a
second voice pipes up (male) and says 'You know you can sign in on your
radio app'....why do they think I would want to use a radio app...

Why not play random words from a dictionary into a speech synthesiser
    with a boring monotone voice.

    Or just nothing.

I don't have a radio on to get to sleep. Trained myself out of it when I started travelling for work.

Yes this is because you are listening through bbc sounds normally, and they want to get you to have an ID. I have signed in with my puter but now both
the TV and Alexa say, you have not signed in with your account, in the case
of the alexa, it says, go to the alexa app, I've sent details to it, well I think if you know its me enough to tell me on my app then why the hell
should I need to log in? I ignore it, as on radio it does not affect things. You might for example say, Ask my tuner radio to play bbc radio 5 live and often this circumvents the bbc sounds app and goes to the international
stream. The snag with this is that certain sports events are not allowed to
be heard on the bbc outside of their region so you often get some repeating message explaining this.
The other problem with increasing use of radio players instead of the
native tune-in skill, is that multi room audio cannot be selected on these stations. For example if you say play Manx radio fm everywhere, and you have defined that group in the app, then it will, but try to do this with any station from the bbc or one not in the tune in list, and you will either be ignored or it will suggest it did not find what you wanted.

I think any station with Cricket on it is great for sleeping played low
    level.
However, Alexa has a handy skill called sleep sounds.

Ask sleep sounds to play rail trip or rain, or rain on tent, or fountain or almost anything you want to hear!

I often leave my Roberts radio on sleep, usually set to around 30 or 60
minute. It can be a bit confusing though because it does a very slow
fade out so you can be listening and wondering why it is getting fainter
    and fainter! -

In the days of radio cassette recorders, some had a sleep feature which
used the play time of a cassette as a timer - for radio as well as
cassette. I never used it, but it occurred to me that the loud click of
the auto-stop (which was usually mechanical) would wake you up!
