From AnthonyL@21:1/5 to All on Thu Feb 2 19:53:39 2023
Did anyone hear the interview with the Bank of England Governor Andrew
Bailey on BBC News today? I could not understand a word the
interviewer spoke due to the abysmal sound quality. The Governor came
    over fine as seen/heard on

It sounded as if the interviewer was in an echo chamber.

I've not heard the report, but that description tends to suggest Brian's diagnosis - if the mike is picking up reflected sound, coloured by
reflections off the room walls, in preference to direct mouth-to-mike
sound, it will have strange echoes. Maybe the interviewer did not have a
mike of his own and was only being picked off the back or side of the interviewee's polar diagram.

Yes if the mike was switched to something like hyper cardeoid, than most of
the should from them would be reflected. Figure of 8 might have been
    better.
Listening to a demo of the Blue Yeti on the internet, you could get some terrible results by the phase and delays applied to the capsules inside it.

It Is often true that the more complex the device, the more ways there are
    to make a cock up!

When I opened the link, all I got was a sound clip of the interviewee,
and it sounded as if they were using an omnidirectional camera mounted microphone, and there were no soft furnishings in the room. Someone had
edited out the interviewer. If there was a crew there, they need some
training and more time to set up.

I couldn't tell whether they were making a Zoom call or similar, but if
so, the apparent distance of the camera from the interviewee would
explain the room sound, especially as he did not appear to be using an
earbud to speak and listen, but the phone's hand free speaker.
