I was wondering if it is likely to be the Global server, my broadband connection (which is generally excellent - no other devices cut off),
the speaker itself (I see there is a new model) or the Wi-Fi
    connection (using 5GHz).

    Any help appreciated.

If you are near your router 5GHz is always better as it will be
    significantly faster.

In this area 5ghz seems more solid due to the clutter of people using the
lower bands. Certainly the Amazon Echo devices of the older vintage are more prone to wifi dropout than the later ones which according to the router are
    on 5ghz, like the Iphone.
I've not tried the Iphone app on for Global as the last version was
completely inaccessible to voice over so was a none starter.
Besides I'd rather play radio on something easier to interface by wire
    to my stereo.
I until think Classic FM is stereo on freeview etc, unlike their other stations.

I don't think there is much to choose between wifi on one manufacturer or
any old tablet or laptop from anyone else whatever the vintage within
    reason.

That would indicate a bluetooth issue. You really need a wired network connection to prove its not radio related.

Sonos and similar wifi speakers get their Internet audio stream direct
from the router. The app sets up the stream but can be switched off
    after that.

You can buy a 3rd Generation Echo Dot currently on offer from Amazon
for £17 which will stram Classic FM but it works with voice control.
Add another Echo Dot and you get a stereo pair for £34 which is a real
bargain, sounds half-decent and has no dropouts -- but do you want more speakers?

What happened when you hard wired the speaker to the iPad Mini?

Still to try this as I will need a long period as the dropout is so
infrequent. Some days I like to lie down for an hour and listen to
Classic FM but today was not one of them :-)
