Title: Just kind of odd

Review: While the illustrations are excellent, the actual content leaves much to be desired. The writing style is very stilted and in an attempt to “simplify” the stories or modify them for kids it loses any real depth to the stories. As well as
completely re-writing some of the stories, an example being Medusa, now I get that you may not want to get into Poseidon raping her in Athena’s temple, leading to Athena punishing her, but the idea of Poseidon looking at her and saying weird things
like she had poisonous locks and that was good, scaly skin and that was good, and so on then falling asleep in her arms is just kinda weird. If you want pretty pictures and a lazy intro to Greek myths it is fine, if you want the real stories move on.

Title: A collection of biographical sketches of Greek gods and heroes

Review: This book consists of 25 biographical sketches of figures from Greek Mythology. It’s one of those books that grew on me, and the reason it grew on me was a few of the chapters toward the end were engaging, such as those about Heracles, Jason,
and Helen. This also means that the number of stars I gave it is fairly meaningless. It was in no danger of getting 5 stars nor 1, but could’ve been anywhere in between at various points in my reading.

The problem with the book is that the unit of interest isn’t the myth, i.e. not the story, but rather the mythical figure, the various gods and heroes of ancient Greece. Because of this organization, some of the chapters have a tight and memorable
story, such as that of Heracles and his 12 labors, while others are just piles of genealogical facts mixed with odd mythical happenings (e.g. who burst from whose forehead) and tossed with that mythical figure’s bit parts in larger myths. The book is a
good, solid reference book for schoolkids doing research on Greek Mythology, but much of it’s not very engaging to read.

The graphics are beautiful and colorful, if a bit artsy (not always instantaneously clear in subject.) There are maps, a timeline describing happenings of ancient Greece -- real and mythical, a bibliography, and a quick guide to the characters that would
make more sense if the book wasn’t a collection of relatively brief biographical sketches to begin with (but repetition has its merits, particularly for children.)

If you’re looking for a collection of biographies of mythical Greeks (i.e. a reference for children,) then this is a good book for you. If you’re looking to get your kids intrigued by the Greek myths, then you might want to shop around. Put another
way, if you’re looking for a version of what Neil Gaiman did with this “Norse Mythology,” only for the Greeks, this isn’t it.

Title: Beautiful Illustrations, Questionable Text

Review: The Treasury of Greek Mythology gets so many parts of the myths wrong in the text that it’s embarrassing! I really wanted to love the book because of the breathtaking illustrations but it annoyed me so much how the author tried to sanitize the
myths to the point that I had to edit my book with a red sharpie for her. The author Especially doesn’t like the original stories of Zeus’s kids, and tired to say that he married every woman he had an exploit with and then had to make up a reason as
to why the woman would have terrible issues after Zeus slept with or raped them, which was usually actually because Hera was the one that was causing their struggle out of her fury of Zeus having so many affairs. I particularly hated that there was
multiple myths in this book that the women were actually raped but then the author changed the rape into them “getting married to the god and having a kid” which feels like a disgusting change probably so kids could read the book but you can’t have
Greek Mythology without murder and rape so instead of changing history they should have just let parents and teachers decide if the content is appropriate for kids. I would only recommend this book because the illustrations are so beautiful, but don’t
trust any time that the author says a god married a woman because they were probably in reality raped. I also particularly hated some of the narratives given to the goddesses, the author should have left the text to facts. For example at one point she
said that Artemis enjoyed being watched which felt so gross that I crossed that line out. Artemis once killed a man for accidentally seeing her naked, I don’t think she “felt good being watched“!!

Title: Perfect for the curious 9 year old

Review: My daughter asked for a Greek mythology book for Christmas. I looked into many different ones; most were pretty vague or didn’t cover the classical gods. Others were too descriptive in the “distractions” of the gods.
National Geographic is something I read as a child so I was thrilled to find their take on it. It’s a massive tome. Complete with a family tree of sorts and the Roman interpretations of each god.
This is by far one of her favorites as well. She Carrie’s it to school often and is quoting it to her Grandfather most evenings.
Well written and easy to understand for children her age I’ve had a few parents ask where I found it. The art work is stunning; also done in the way you’d see Greek/ Roman frescos.
I have a feeling that this book will be in our family a very long time.

Title: My new favorite author, Fun to read to kids

Review: Donna Jo Napoli's narratives about each of the major gods and goddesses in Greek mythology, bolstered by the captivating artwork of Christina Balit, caught me completely by surprise. I ordered this book to read some stories to my young daughter,
and I found myself equally drawn in. I am not a fiction fan, but the presentation by Napoli and Balit about a topic that I learned extensively in high school classics study has reinvigorated my interest in the stories and fantastical adventures told in
the myths. We read about a few characters each night, and it is a book that we both enjoy.

Review: The writing is very stylistic and gives a beautiful retelling of ancient myths for a newbie. Although translated for the young reader, the stories follow very closely to the language of some of Homer's works. The artwork is really nice and
throughout the book are little blurbs with trivia and cross-cultural connections. I bought it for my 10-year old nephew but I kind of want to keep it for myself!
