A man who was filmed throwing litter out of his car has been fined after the footage was shared on social media.

The litter lout, who was filmed dumping rubbish out of his car window at a fast-food restaurant in Newark, was slapped with a £150 fine.

The footage on social media allowed Newark and Sherwood District Council to identify the man and the number plate on his Seat, after an influx of comments from people in support of penalising the offender.

Since January 2019, the council has issued a total of 54 fixed penalty notices for offences like fly-tipping, littering and dog fouling.

One driver was penalised after he threw a cigarette out of his window in Castlegate, Newark, while another was fined £150 for littering in the town centre.

Councillor Roger Jackson, chairman of the district council’s leisure and environment committee, said: “We take all instances of littering seriously and will pursue cases where evidence is available.

"While our enforcement officers do everything they can, residents are also our eyes and ears and we actively encourage them to report incidents to us along with any evidence they have.

“This is, unfortunately, another example of inexcusable laziness where rubbish could have quite easily been taken home or placed into one of the numerous bins nearby.

"Last summer, Newark earned the award of the ‘Least Littered Environment in the East Midlands 2019’, recognising the high standards of cleanliness and we want this to be maintained.

Out of interest, do you know what "Newark" is an anagram of?
