Councillor Mark Ieronimo, portfolio holder for roads, and transport,
said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Safer Roads Humber to deliver this scheme. Installing red light enforcement cameras
on dangerous junctions is an effective way to reduce the number of
collisions and injuries on the road.
“The cameras will also help enforce traffic rules and deter drivers from running red lights - this will make the junction safer for everyone, including pedestrians and cyclists.”

As a pedestrian using this crossing on a regular basis I always check
when the green man indicates to cross as I have lost count of the number
of times cars are still coming through the lights when they are clearly
at red. A very dangerous junction. !!!!
The problem is that too many drivers are in a hurry these days...
chancers, amber gamblers, and the people who just don't care.
You can guarantee every traffic light junction in East Yorkshire is the
same, some are clearly worse than others. Since the end of the covid
lockdown and people started driving again, driving standards in general
have gone down the toilet.

The " let's hit the motorists" brigade are spouting the usual rubbish,
the problem is there is a large proportion of drivers who think that
rules of the road, including traffic 🚦 lights don't apply to them, if the only way is to make them take note is to have these systems in place so
IF and WHEN they DO "run," the red lights, may be, just may be, they'll change and make the roads safer for everyone.

The funding for this scheme was awarded to Hull City Council after submitting a funding bid to the Safer Roads Humber Board in April 2023.
Ian Robertson, partnership manager at Safer Roads Humber, said: “We are committed to reducing those killed or injured on the roads of our area, working in partnership with the four local authorities, the Police, Fire service, National Highways, and
“The most recent figures for those killed or seriously injured show a reduction of nine per cent in our area compared to three per cent nationally which is encouraging, however there is much for us all to do, to reduce those casualties further.
“We are pleased to be supporting this red light camera initiative in partnership with Hull City Council as it has been proven around the country that these systems reduce the number of collisions at the junctions.
“If road users change their behaviour to adhere to the red light signals and refrain from exceeding the speed limits through the junction, it will be a much safer junction for all, especially those most vulnerable on the road.”
The contract will be awarded to a specialist contractor, who will carry out the work in the near future on behalf of Hull City Council. The contract will last six years, whereby annual maintenance and calibration of the equipment will be done.
