  • A38 in Plymouth closed after cyclist hit by car

    The A38 westbound is closed this morning after a cyclist was hit by a car in the early hours.

    The key commuter route has been shut heading towards Plymouth, from Plympton to Marsh Mills.

    Police say they were were called at around 2:50am on Wednesday 21 June, following reports of a collision between a Hyundai saloon and a cyclist on the A38 near Deep Lane, Plympton.

    A full closure was put in place as emergency services attended.

    The injured cyclist who is a man in his 40s from the Mid-Devon area was taken to Derriford Hospital in a critical condition.

    The driver of the Hyundai, a man in his 40s from Plymouth, was arrested in connection to the crash. He remains in police custody.

    Scene investigation work continues and police are appealing for witnesses.

    A diversion is in place which reroutes all traffic through Plympton. Drivers should leave the A38 at Deep Lane, turn right onto the B3146, follow to the Marsh Mills junction and re-join the A38.

    This is likely to cause significant traffic problems on local roads in the area.

    Did the cyclist have any lights?

    Was he breathalysed? ( The driver would have been. )

    Given the incident happened at 2:50 am and involved only a bike and a car - therefore clearing the road would be trivial- why the need to close the
    road for more than a matter of, say, 20 mins?

    Certainly no need to disrupt the morning traffic as people go to work etc.
