• UK cycling - gift aid membership

From Tim Woodall@21:1/5 to All on Fri Feb 12 12:38:38 2021
I was sure I read somewhere about how CTC memberships are (or will be)
no longer eligible for gift aid.

Am I imaging this? I cannot find anything online to support this but I
cannot imagine why I thought it if it's not true (perhaps it was another charity but I cannot imagine which one it could have been)

I read the same. I think it might have been in an e-mail from CTC. Or
it might have been in Cycle. It probably wasn't in the regular Friday
CTC e-mail, which I mostly just skim now.

I remember getting an e-mail to that effect. I can't find it now, but
    this forum thread
    <https://forum.cyclinguk.org/viewtopic.php?p=1570036>
confirms it and quotes the e-mail:

We are writing to inform you that we are no longer able to claim
Gift Aid on membership fees. Please note this does not affect Gift
Aid on donations made to the charity.

To qualify for claiming Gift Aid on membership fees, the value of
membership benefits enjoyed and used by members must not breach
certain limits. Each year, we are required to monitor the value of
those benefits, and the take-up of offers and discounts. I would
like to confirm that the limit has been reached so we will not be
able to claim Gift Aid on any membership fees after March 2020.

    It was an email. Thanks.

You are correct. Email received from Cycling UK a little while ago
    See below
    John M

"Thank you for completing a Gift Aid declaration for Cycling UK. As a
charity, this has enabled us to make your membership go further at no additional cost to you.

We are writing to inform you that we are no longer able to claim Gift
Aid on membership fees. Please note this does not affect Gift Aid on
    donations made to the charity.

To qualify for claiming Gift Aid on membership fees, the value of
membership benefits enjoyed and used by members must not breach certain
limits. Each year, we are required to monitor the value of those
benefits, and the take-up of offers and discounts. I would like to
confirm that the limit has been reached so we will not be able to claim
Gift Aid on any membership fees after March 2020.

This is a direct result of the increased value you receive through your membership with Cycling UK and we’re pleased to see so many members
using their benefits. The change will now allow us to offer you more for
your membership fee, including increased insurance and further retail discounts".

Does this also mean that members can no longer claim higher rate tax relief on their membership fee?

Yes. As of the 20-21 tax year.
