Considering the dross-fest uk.radio.amateur has become, I can do
nothing else but whole-heartedly second that.

I have been opposed to the Foundation Licence since its inception
because it undermines the technical nous that should be the basis
of all amateur / ham radio activity.
The old written RAE was said to have been about the standard of
the old GCEs and in a country where a good education is available
across a wide range of subjects, there should never have been
any difficulty for anyone with a true interest in amateur / ham
radio and its technicalities to tackle and pass such an exam
with ease.
As to what appears to be an obsession with recruiting young
people and children, amateur / ham radio was never the
pursuit of youth, witness the photographs of early
experimenters such as McMichael that can be seen in the
material that the RSGB publish in their claim to be the
successor of the London Wireless Club in 1913.
Truly, their are those of us who caught the bug in our
childhood years, but that arose from a genuine interest
in technical things and not because we were swept in
from the gutters to swell the membership lists of
any organisation.
