I was wondering if the amateurs in Ukraine were assisting their effort
by acting as Voluntary interceptors to assist their forces? I'd gladly volunteer myself - apart from zero knowledge of Russian!

There are news reports that the Russians are using normal mobile phone
networks (and stealing phones to use them), and these are encrypted over
    the air.

I would assume that official tactical communications is also encrypted.

I think most of the signals intelligence is being done by things like
FORTE12, the US long duration drone that has been flying just outside
    hostile air space.

I did hear somewhere that their tactical radios were giving problems
with secure comms and they had to resort in some cases to plain speech.
