• Never ceases to amaze me how far weak signals can propagate

From Gareth Paley@21:1/5 to All on Tue Aug 3 16:22:02 2021
Over the last few days I've been alternating between a mcHF SDR radio with WJSTX CAT control and a stand alone WSPR beacon running on a μBITX kit radio - both feeding 1 watt into a bog standard end fed halfwave wire in a small garden.

Had my first spot from Australia on 20m today - 16919km away with just 1 watt. Other spots from 9590km on 15m and 7128km on 10m.

1 watt is too easy - I'm going to have to start winding down the power :-)

You won't need a licence soon.

With any luck. After beating my personal best this morning (500mW to Australia: 2021-08-15 07:02 - VK5KJP in PF95jr - 16224 Km, 10081 miles) I'm going to start winding the power further down to what should be licence exempt levels. You do see the odd SWL
spotting calls in the WSPR database - I don't see why they should not be able to transmit 200mW without a licence, it's not like they are going to cause any more interference than PLT already does. Might bring a few more into our declining hobby.

Just got to find a more accurate power meter on fleaBay - my Daiwa ain't much cop below 27dBm.
