Clearly you’ve forgotten the Kent Strain, latter renamed
    Alpha.

That was, supposedly, going to “sweep the World”.

    It didn’t.

Let's be a bit more accurate:

The Scientists: "We've found a new variant."

The Politicians: "Look folks: we need to be more careful for a
while, just in case this new variant puts us back to square 1.
The scientists tell us that we'll know more in a few weeks."

The Media: "PM warns of threat of new variant" soon followed by
"Deadly new variant may sweep the world".

BBC News, to their eternal shame, are nowadays included in "The
Media", when it comes to sensationalism (as opposed to basic,
    objective, disinterested reporting).

    John

SAGE is packed with, so called, scientists. They haven’t
produced a single prediction which has been remotely accurate.
Even when they made an error ( about a year ago) and
restrictions were implemented they didn’t reverse them when
they spotted they’d used the wrong numbers. The difference was
    HUGE.

The 'scientists' are as guilty as the media. Whitty’s
    presentations were a joke.

Ferguson's early work simulated the outcome if we didn't take
action or took only limited action. He turned out to be
surprisingly accurate (whatever the Daily Mail might say).

Ferguson has a history of grossly inaccurate predictions. Covid is
    just his most recent one.

That's certainly Ferguson's reputation in some quarters. It's like
Dr Fauci's reputation amongst Covid-deniers in America. Both remain
leading experts with a good track record.

There will always be people (probably writing for the Daily Mail or
politically motivated) who cavil at revised forecasts when the
    facts or base assumptions change.

As far as I know there's no one else doing a better job than either
    of those two.

Thinking back, another person advising that Covid was not as bad as
