It was getting older certainly, and started to be replaced by the 21CN

Yes, It's being replaced. It was running on i336 processors as
installed, I remember fitting upgrade pentium 100 boards in the module controllers but I think that was about its limt. But it's still going
strong in many places. Same for AXE10 the othe legacy digital system.

21CN never replaced SySX/AXE. It simply didn't work as a voip PSTN.

That fits in with my first paragraph, I am not familiar enough with the
detail to know much more than I wrote. I don't know exactly where the
21CN/20CN boundary lies, it's probably different in different areas.

I do know that reliability is a big part of the reason that the older kit remains in use.

21CN was badly designed. It was a hot potch of components from
different manufacturers including in the main Huawei and Cisco. I was
directly involved in the first trial and it simply didn't work as a
PSTN. It is however still providing service as an IP backbone for the

I suppose it's the S in PSTN that is the problem, presumably as older kit
and networks are withdrawn there will be less and less of that.

At some point everything will be IP-based.

I remember walking past a large exchange in Fulham in the early 80s, in
the dead of night you could hear all the Strowger mechanisms churning
away, didn't seem to matter what the time was.

21CN was badly designed. It was a hot potch of components from different

however still providing service as an IP backbone for the country.

Isn't that why Yaesu invented the 20dB attenuator?
