• Television takes control of this old chart from 1996

From Chris Brown@21:1/5 to All on Sun Jan 24 17:12:51 2021
At any rate, there are tracks here that surely wouldn't have been where
they are without the box, and some that wouldn't even have existed.
Apart from the fact that it's 25 years ago, the most topical element is probably the song title at 92, and the band name at 17.
Bit odd to have 3T at 4 and a song called "Born In 69" at 68.

The 90s still seem like they were only yesterday so the realisation that
this chart is now 25 years old is somewhat depressing.

    1.  (NE) Babylon Zoo    Spaceman

I quite liked this one then. I can't stand it now.

    2.   (1) George Michael    Jesus To A Child

A lovely song but it's a bit too long.

    3.  (NE) Goldbug    Whole Lotta Love

I love the Pearl & Dean bit, it takes me back to being at the cinema
when I was a kid. It's a decent cover of the Led Zeppeling song though
    her voice isn't brilliant.

    4.  (NE) 3T    Anything
    5.   (2) Michael Jackson    Earth Song

Two songs with a Michael Jackson connection. 'Anything' is awful. I do
    still like 'Earth Song'.

    6.   (3) Boyzone    Father And Son

Decentish cover of the Cat Stevens song.

    7.   (7) Cher    One By One

I love this record despite the fact it reminds me of being dumped! My
then girlfriend and I had been arguing for months and it was obvious the relationship wasn't working out. Anyway, roll on to Saturday 6 January
1996 and I got the elbow. I was going to finish with her anyway but she
got in first... I then went home after being dumped, turned on the radio
and this song was playing. Spookily it had also been playing when I
turned off the radio on the morning when I was on the way out of the
house to do some overtime at work. Hence this song always reminds me of
the events that day. As for the song, I actually love it despite the
memories it still brings to this day.

    8.   (5) Everything But The Girl    Missing {Todd Terry Mix}

A brillaint record that still sounds excellent to this day.

    9.   (6) Oasis    Wonderwall

Great song but I still think Liam's vocals are too loud in the mix.

    10.  (4) Baby D    So Pure

    Decent song.

    11. (18) Coolio ft LV    Gangsta's Paradise

    Brilliant song.

    12. (35) Upside Down    Change Your Mind

I think this is the one that sounds like a third rate 'Careless
    Whisper'. If so, it's awful.

    13. (NE) The Chemical Brothers    Loops Of Fury EP
    [Loops Of Fury; (The Best Of) Breakin' Up; Get Up On It Like This;
    Chemical Beats (Dave Clarke Remix)]

I recall the title but not the song.

    14. (NE) Shed Seven    Getting Better

Good song I've not heard for years.

    15. (NE) The Saw Doctors    World Of Good

    No recollection of this one.

    16.  (8) Cast    Sandstorm

    Decent song.

    17. (16) The Presidents Of The United States Of America    Lump

I was only listening to this last week (was 1996 on Pick Of The Pops
last week? I may have heard it on there). Decent song.

    18. (10) TLC    Creep '96

    Not a patch on 'Waterfalls'.

    19.  (9) Coolio    Too Hot

I think this is based around the song of the same name by Kool & The
    Gang? Other than that, unmemorable.

    20. (NE) Skunk Anansie    Weak

An excellent song by a great band.

    21. (NE) Ace Of Base    Beautiful Life

    Great pop song.

    24. (23) Nightcrawlers ft John Reid    Let's Push It

I think he eventually ran out of songs to sing about pushing.

    1. (NE) Babylon Zoo Spaceman

Very innovative and several different versions. Atlantic 252 played one
that was 'fast' all the way through a lot.

Was gutted I couldn't get that station when I moved to Norfolk later in 96. Broadland 102 wasn't quite the same.

    10. (4) Baby D So Pure

Liked the group but not one of their better efforts.

    14. (NE) Shed Seven Getting Better

    See 10.

    17. (16) The Presidents Of The United States Of America Lump

Clever and imaginative unlike most of their work...

    34. (22) Levellers Just The One

Could play this on bass at one time

    35. (27) Pulp Disco 2000

One of my all time favourite songs. Magnificent video. Also had a thing
for a girl called Deborah at the time.

Bought my partner a signed sleeve of this for her 40th

    37. (26) The Mike Flowers Pops Wonderwall

Loved this, the only one of my friendship group to do so (maybe the only one who got the joke)

Seemed to tie in very nicely with the era of Alan Partridge and taking the
    mick out of the 70s.

Watched the first series of Partridge with my parents, I was about 16, they late 40s. I don't think either of them cracked a smile once. I was
    rolling...

    38. (28) Dubstar Not So Manic Now

Good lyrics, the monotony of the tower block. Wonder if she'd spent time in lockdown...

    60. (48) The Beatles Free As A Bird

One of the more disappointing comebacks of the 90s. Thought Real Love was
    the stronger song.

    67. (45) Skee-Lo I Wish

Not a rap fan but liked this at the time, witty and very likeable

Yes, reception of Atlantic 252 was patchy. If I recall I couldn't pick
it up when I was living in London when the station started broadcasting
but when I went to the north east for a weekend I could pick it up
without any problem. I can't remember if I ever did pick it up in London

Radio 1 loved it as it seemed to be playing every time I listened to the station.

I do remember some of the kids at my school talking about it and they
wouldn't have lived any further North-East than Hertfordshire.

I've done some searching on Google and it appears that parts of the
south east including parts of London did have problems with reception in
the early days until the kw output was hiked up. When the station
launched on 1 September 1989 I was living in Wembley so not too far from
you (I lived in the Preston Road area so pretty close to where you would
have been living I believe) but maybe it was a dead spot for good
reception. By the early 90s it looks like the reception was much better.
And surprisingly for a long wave station its audience reach in the UK
    was almost 4 million.

Yes, closer to home than school but presumably the same sort of signal
    all around London.
This would have been around the time that the BBC were threatening to
take Radio 4 off longwave to make room for a news service, although in
the end it was Radio 5 that got the boot instead.

The 90s still seem like they were only yesterday so the realisation that
this chart is now 25 years old is somewhat depressing.

More than half my life (so far!) ago.

    1.  (NE) Babylon Zoo    Spaceman

I quite liked this one then. I can't stand it now.

I never even liked it at the time, but in hindsight I can sort of
    understand why people liked it.

    2.   (1) George Michael    Jesus To A Child

A lovely song but it's a bit too long.

My hot take is that for all his skills as a writer, singer etc, he
wasn't that good as a producer and needed somebody else to rein him in a
    bit.
It's odd that he seemed quite selective about how many songs he released
but was reluctant to edit in terms of duration.

    3.  (NE) Goldbug    Whole Lotta Love

I love the Pearl & Dean bit, it takes me back to being at the cinema
    when I was a kid.

Odd but true fact: I went to the cinema precisely once in my entire
childhood. I don't recall having a bad time there, but clearly I never
asked my family to take me there again.
Anyway, for that reason I didn't really recognise the Pearl & Dean theme although obviously I did read about it at the time.

It's a decent cover of the Led Zeppelin song though
    her voice isn't brilliant.

It's not an obvious song for a female singer (though maybe that was the
    point?)

    4.  (NE) 3T    Anything
    5.   (2) Michael Jackson    Earth Song

Two songs with a Michael Jackson connection. 'Anything' is awful. I do
    still like 'Earth Song'.

I didn't even like it then.

    6.   (3) Boyzone    Father And Son

Decentish cover of the Cat Stevens song.

Some pointed out that he sings the whole song in the same voice, unlike
    the original.

I had to admit that I did like it. Apart from the sax solo.

    8.   (5) Everything But The Girl    Missing {Todd Terry Mix}

A brillaint record that still sounds excellent to this day.

Even the original mix is quite good (and slightly less over-familiar).

    9.   (6) Oasis    Wonderwall

Great song but I still think Liam's vocals are too loud in the mix.

Things being too loud in the mix was basically what Oasis did though
    wasn't it?

    10.  (4) Baby D    So Pure

    Decent song.

Not their best but deserves to be less forgotten.

    11. (18) Coolio ft LV    Gangsta's Paradise

    Brilliant song.

    Agreed.

    12. (35) Upside Down    Change Your Mind

I think this is the one that sounds like a third rate 'Careless
    Whisper'.

    Yes.

    If so, it's awful.

    And yes again.
The 35-12 climb (very unusual in 1996 of course) was due to the
broadcast of the Inside Story Documentary - I'll share the link as it's unlisted on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJMfW_8sSJQ&

Perhaps if the record company had released the single a week later it
could have been a Top 10 hit. No wonder they went bust.

    13. (NE) The Chemical Brothers    Loops Of Fury EP
    [Loops Of Fury; (The Best Of) Breakin' Up; Get Up On It Like This;
    Chemical Beats (Dave Clarke Remix)]

I recall the title but not the song.

You wouldn't have had much time to get to know it as this was its only
    week in the Top 75!
One of the B-side tracks did make it to their next album.

    14. (NE) Shed Seven    Getting Better

Good song I've not heard for years.

I still listen to Shed Seven quite a lot, they're a bit like comfort
food for me, so I hear this fairly often. Not quite my favourite of theirs.

    15. (NE) The Saw Doctors    World Of Good

    No recollection of this one.

I think I remember it from TotP that week (although I thought I
remembered it as a video and the episode guide suggests they were
actually in the studio) and I'm pretty sure GLR were playing it too.

    16.  (8) Cast    Sandstorm

    Decent song.

Cast doing what they did best, and at the perfect pop song length of 2:42.

    17. (16) The Presidents Of The United States Of America    Lump

I was only listening to this last week (was 1996 on Pick Of The Pops
    last week?

I think it was, but I'd already scheduled this by then. I think they did
this week in 2019 because I was listening on iPlayer when I was in my
    old job.

I may have heard it on there).

One of my acquaintances who does an online radio show of old charts
played this exact week on Sunday as well. It's all coincidental.

    Decent song.

Yeah, I went off it for a while but I don't mind it now.

    18. (10) TLC    Creep '96

    Not a patch on 'Waterfalls'.

But less ruined by overexposure. Although if you bought this, guess what
    was on the B-side?

    19.  (9) Coolio    Too Hot

I think this is based around the song of the same name by Kool & The
    Gang? Other than that, unmemorable.

Like the aforementioned Waterfalls, it has a safe-sex/anti AIDS message. Presumably the brand name "Trojan" was allowed to stay in because the
product wasn't on sale in the UK.

    20. (NE) Skunk Anansie    Weak

An excellent song by a great band.

By far my favourite of theirs.

    21. (NE) Ace Of Base    Beautiful Life

    Great pop song.

Something about them always seemed a bit phony, but this isn't as
    annoying as some of theirs.

    24. (23) Nightcrawlers ft John Reid    Let's Push It

I think he eventually ran out of songs to sing about pushing.

Still, if you'd asked me in January 1996 to guess which act from the
chart would be looking at a possible Top 40 hit in 2021, I wouldn't have
    said "Nightcrawlers".

    chart date: 27 January 1996

    1.  (NE) Babylon Zoo Spaceman

Very innovative and several different versions.  Atlantic 252 played one that was 'fast' all the way through a lot.

I did hear rumours that some people bought the single expecting four
    minutes of the Levi's ad.
IIRC the album version doesn't speed up at the end.

    10.  (4) Baby D So Pure

Liked the group but not one of their better efforts.

I would agree, but it makes a bit of a change to hear this one. Or it
would if you ever did *fetches copy of Now 33*.

    14. (NE) Shed Seven Getting Better

    See 10.

I do agree about this one. I can see why it was a single (and their
first Top 20 hit) but it's not as interesting a song as 'Speakeasy' or
    'Where Have You Been Tonight?'.

I remember when 'Somebody Told Me' by the Killers came out some people
    said it resembled this.

    17. (16) The Presidents Of The United States Of America Lump

Clever and imaginative unlike most of their work...

I did like 'Peaches' as well but I lost interest after that.

    34. (22) Levellers Just The One

Could play this on bass at one time

    I never learnt the bass.
I actually preferred the album version of this track.

    35. (27) Pulp Disco 2000

One of my all time favourite songs.  Magnificent video.  Also had a
thing for a girl called Deborah at the time.

Bought my partner a signed sleeve of this for her 40th

I hope Deborah wasn't jealous, etc.

    37. (26) The Mike Flowers Pops Wonderwall

Loved this, the only one of my friendship group to do so (maybe the only
    one who got the joke)

I was never sure why they started in the middle of the song. Maybe the
first verse didn't suit the style.

Seemed to tie in very nicely with the era of Alan Partridge and taking
the mick out of the 70s.

There was a semi-ironic revival of easy-listening music in the 90s too,
    of course.

Watched the first series of Partridge with my parents, I was about 16,
they late 40s.  I don't think either of them cracked a smile once.  I
    was rolling...

My parents would have been early 40s at this point so that whole
style/era of comedy was what we've always had in common. We always used
to watch KYTV and stuff like that so Partridge was a step on from there.

    38. (28) Dubstar Not So Manic Now

Good lyrics, the monotony of the tower block.  Wonder if she'd spent
    time in lockdown...

Heh. I suppose it's even easier to sympathise now.
    I can't remember why I didn't buy this record.

    60. (48) The Beatles Free As A Bird

One of the more disappointing comebacks of the 90s.

    How could it not be?

    Thought Real Love
    was the stronger song.

So did I (and indeed it had been released before) so I can only assume
they picked this one because it had more scope for McCartney and
    Harrison to contribute.

    67. (45) Skee-Lo I Wish

Not a rap fan but liked this at the time, witty and very likeable

Very much in the category of "rap songs acceptable to people who don't particularly like rap". Track 2 on the classic Pass The Vibes compilation.

It's a point that I often find myself thinking of in these threads, the
sense that there are generation gaps, not only in what you're into
yourself but in what you grow up with. Those 70s comics weren't part of
my childhood because my parents weren't interested in them so we
wouldn't have been watching them. We did watch Tony Hancock though, he
doesn't seem to fit the same timeline somehow.

    I know 5 of top 11, surprising!

There are some big songs in here alright, and I guess some that are
    known for non-musical reasons.

Anyway, time to run through some other versions:

    3. (NE) Goldbug Whole Lotta Love [cover of the Led Zep track, also samples 'Astronaut', the famous Pearl & Dean Theme]
    6. (3) Boyzone Father And Son [cover of the Cat Stevens song, later redone as a duet]
    7. (7) Cher One By One [original version by JoJo & The Real People]
    9. (6) Oasis Wonderwall [hit covers by Mike Flowers Pops and Ryan Adams]
    11. (18) Coolio ft LV Gangsta's Paradise [later covered by LV on his own]
    19. (9) Coolio Too Hot [based on the Kool & the Gang song]
    27. (12) Bucketheads Got Myself Together [samples 'Movin' by Brass Construction]
    29. (19) Bjork It's Oh So Quiet [first English recording by Betty Hutton]
    37. (26) The Mike Flowers Pops Wonderwall [other hit versions by Oasis
    and Ryan Adams]
    38. (28) Dubstar Not So Manic Now [original by Brick Supply]
    45. (NE) Bonnie Tyler Making Love (Out Of Nothing At All) [original by
    Air Supply]
    47. (38) Robson & Jerome I Believe/Up On The Roof [both covers]
    48. (31) Taylor Dayne Tell It To My Heart {1996 remix} [hit cover by
    Kelly Llorenna]
    51. (NE) Urban Discharge ft. She Wanna Drop A House (On That Bitch) [lyrics "borrowed" in 'Feel It' by Tamperer ft Maya]
    57. (36) Pato Banton With Sting Spirits In The Material World [cover of
    the Police hit]
    61. (RE) Oasis Whatever [plagiarised 'How Sweet To Be An Idiot' by Neil
    Innes]
    67. (45) Skee-Lo I Wish [based on 'For What It's Worth' by Buffalo Springfield, also sampled on other hits]
    71. (74) Oasis Cigarettes & Alcohol [charting cover by Rod Stewart]
    76. (NE) Newton Sky High [cover of the Jigsaw hit, apparently it was
actually the original singer on vocals]
    80. (RE) Frank Bruno Eye Of The Tiger [cover of the Survivor hit]
