    Chart dated 17th January 1976

    1.   (1) Queen    Bohemian Rhapsody

It's 7th week at number 1. If I recall, by now Top Of The Pops were just playing the second half of the video.

    2.   (4) Sailor    Glass Of Champagne

A record that was still being played quite a lot as an oldie in
1979/1980 by my local ILR station (Metro). I quite like it now but think
I found it annoying back then, probably from being played too much.

    3.  (12) ABBA    Mamma Mia

Heading to the top spot and kickstarting their 2 year period of
dominance where they had 6 number 1 singles out of 7 releases. Another I
didn't like back then but don't mind now.

    4.  (21) Mike Oldfield    In Dulce Jubilo/On Horseback

Although seen as a Christmas hit it didn't burst into life until after
the new year. I remember Tom Browne of the Sunday Radio 1 top 20 chart
show playing 'On Horseback' at one point. I guess by February the main
    side was quite unseasonal.

    5.   (7) 10cc    Art For Art's Sake

Some of 10cc's singles were just far too clever for their own good and
    this is one of them.

    6.   (5) Chubby Checker    Let's Twist Again/The Twist

The 60s revival was under way. Soon there would be a 1930s and 1940s
revival too and even the 1950s got a look in.

    7.   (6) Andy Fairweather-Low    Wide Eyed And Legless

Another record that Metro Radio loved and I found annoying. After this
    the hits dried up.

    8.  (18) Billy Howard    King Of The Cops

A not very funny parody song of the famous American TV detectives of the
    time.

    9.  (23) Small Faces    Itchycoo Park {1975 reissue}

Another hit from the 1960s revived. Good song.

    10. (11) Demis Roussos    Happy To be On An Island In The Sun

Awful record by Mr Warbly Voice.

    11.  (2) Laurel And Hardy With The Avalon Boys featuring Chill Wills
The Trail Of The Lonesome Pine

I don't think either Laurel or Hardy sang on this record. Stan Laurel
lived in my town for a while, as well as other places in the north east.

    12.  (8) David Bowie    Golden Years

Great song. I love this era of David Bowie. My aunt, who had been a
massive Bowie fan, didn't and she stopped buying his albums.

    13. (13) David Essex    If I Could

Dreary song and proof that David Essex wasn't a natural singer.

    14.  (9) Dana    It's Gonna Be A Cold Cold Christmas

The Christmas hits hung around the charts for much longer back then.
This one is a seemingly forgotten Christmas song which I quite like.

    15. (28) Barry White    Let The Music Play

    Good song by Barry.

    16. (45) The Miracles    Love Machine

This one takes me back to hearing it on Radio Luxembourg more than any
other song on the chart. Great soul track.

    17. (43) R & J Stone    We Do It

Naughty lyrics yet the record never got a ban on Radio 1. Produced by
    Phil "The Collector" Swern.

    18.  (3) Greg Lake    I Believe In Father Christmas

Almost a Christmas number 1 this is one of the best Christmas songs in
my opinion. The lyrics were written by Peter Sinfield who alos wrote
'The Land Of Make Believe' by Bucks Fizz. It seems he liked to write
songs with lyrics that could best be described as taking a cynical view
    of life.

    19. (10) The Drifters    Can I Take You Home Little Girl

Another dull song by the 70s version of The Drifters.

    20. (24) The Fatback Band    Do The Bus Stop

I always wondered, was the Bus Stop meant to be a dance? If so, it's a
    silly name for one.

    21. (25) Crispy And Company    Get It Together

I quite like this forgotten disco song.

    25. (30) Paul Davidson    Midnight Rider

This is a great reggae song.

    27. (46) Electric Light Orchestra    Evil Woman

This kickstarted their most successful period. Good song.

    33. (NE) Walker Brothers    No Regrets

It was almost 9 years previosuly since their last hit. This is a great song.

    37. (NE) Donna Summer    Love To Love You Baby

Another naughty song. Apparently Donna ran up and down a flight of
stairs several times before recording her vocals tgo this song. Banned
by Radio 1 but I got to hear it on Radio Luxembourg.

    38. (47) Paul Simon    50 Ways To Leave Your Lover

A US number 1. Poor song by his standards.

    39. (NE) Slik    Forever And Ever

Tipped to be the next big thing but they struggled to follow up this
number 1. Good song and the first appearance on the charts of Midge Ure.
He would later launch his solo career with a cover of the record at
    number 33.

    46. (NE) Osibisa    Sunshine Day

Good song. I doubt the band ever made much money as years later I did a
home visit to one of the band (I won't mention who it was) when I was
working as a Visiting Officer for the old DHSS. Quite sad really to see
someone who had been on Top Of The Pops down on his luck.

    47. (39) Ethna Campbell    The Old Rugged Cross

The record that spent 11 weeks in the Breakers Chart and then the same
    again in the top 50.

His voice is quite annoying too but at least it's not as sexist as Girls
    Girls Girls.

    4.  (21) Mike Oldfield    In Dulce Jubilo/On Horseback

Although seen as a Christmas hit it didn't burst into life until after
the new year. I remember Tom Browne of the Sunday Radio 1 top 20 chart
show playing 'On Horseback' at one point. I guess by February the main
    side was quite unseasonal.

I suppose out of context it's not as obviously festive as some songs.

    5.   (7) 10cc    Art For Art's Sake

Some of 10cc's singles were just far too clever for their own good and
    this is one of them.

Yeah, 10cc seem like the sort of band I should like but I don't and
    maybe for that reason.

    6.   (5) Chubby Checker    Let's Twist Again/The Twist

The 60s revival was under way. Soon there would be a 1930s and 1940s
revival too and even the 1950s got a look in.

Is this the point where pop is old enough for nostalgia to be serious
    business?

    8.  (18) Billy Howard    King Of The Cops

A not very funny parody song of the famous American TV detectives of the time.

There was a follow-up called 'Disco Cops' you know.

    9.  (23) Small Faces    Itchycoo Park {1975 reissue}

Another hit from the 1960s revived. Good song.

Yes but you shouldn't really feed the ducks with a bun.

    10. (11) Demis Roussos    Happy To be On An Island In The Sun

Awful record by Mr Warbly Voice.

    I'm glad he's happy.

    11.  (2) Laurel And Hardy With The Avalon Boys featuring Chill Wills
The Trail Of The Lonesome Pine

I don't think either Laurel or Hardy sang on this record.

No but I think they mime to it in the film.

    Stan Laurel
lived in my town for a while, as well as other places in the north east.

Obviously lots of famous people have lived in London.

    12.  (8) David Bowie    Golden Years

Great song. I love this era of David Bowie. My aunt, who had been a
massive Bowie fan, didn't and she stopped buying his albums.

The Station To Station album, which this track ended up on, is not one
    of his more approachable ones.
I suppose it's an advantage to younger people like me that we've got
used to the idea that Bowie did lots of different stuff so even if you
don't like it all it's not a shocker.

    13. (13) David Essex    If I Could

Dreary song and proof that David Essex wasn't a natural singer.

    Nice guy, apparently.

    14.  (9) Dana    It's Gonna Be A Cold Cold Christmas

The Christmas hits hung around the charts for much longer back then.

Not sure when the peak was for that.

This one is a seemingly forgotten Christmas song which I quite like.

Yeah, a very big hit that's never mentioned.

    15. (28) Barry White    Let The Music Play

    Good song by Barry.

"She's at home... she's at home..."

    16. (45) The Miracles    Love Machine

This one takes me back to hearing it on Radio Luxembourg more than any
other song on the chart. Great soul track.

They even get away with the funny voices.

    17. (43) R & J Stone    We Do It

Naughty lyrics yet the record never got a ban on Radio 1.

Was it because they were married?

    Produced by
    Phil "The Collector" Swern.

    I think I knew that.

    18.  (3) Greg Lake    I Believe In Father Christmas

Almost a Christmas number 1 this is one of the best Christmas songs in
my opinion. The lyrics were written by Peter Sinfield who alos wrote
'The Land Of Make Believe' by Bucks Fizz. It seems he liked to write
songs with lyrics that could best be described as taking a cynical view
    of life.

Didn't he write for King Crimson too?

    19. (10) The Drifters    Can I Take You Home Little Girl

Another dull song by the 70s version of The Drifters.

A title that might not be seen as appropriate now.

    20. (24) The Fatback Band    Do The Bus Stop

I always wondered, was the Bus Stop meant to be a dance? If so, it's a
    silly name for one.

Yes, judging by the lyrics it seems to involve people moving in front
and behind each other. Which seems a peculiar thing to do at a bus stop,
you wouldn't want to lose your place in the queue.

    21. (25) Crispy And Company    Get It Together

I quite like this forgotten disco song.

Is it really only two minutes long?

    27. (46) Electric Light Orchestra    Evil Woman

This kickstarted their most successful period. Good song.

    Not one of my favourites.

    33. (NE) Walker Brothers    No Regrets

It was almost 9 years previosuly since their last hit. This is a great
    song.

A bit of a one-off comeback chartwise, but an excellent track.

    37. (NE) Donna Summer    Love To Love You Baby

Another naughty song. Apparently Donna ran up and down a flight of
stairs several times before recording her vocals tgo this song.

Never heard it called that before, etc.

    Banned
by Radio 1 but I got to hear it on Radio Luxembourg.

I know it's 'I Feel Love' that gets the attention but I think this is a
    better record.

    38. (47) Paul Simon    50 Ways To Leave Your Lover

A US number 1. Poor song by his standards.

He doesn't actually tell you all 50, but the drumming is good.

    39. (NE) Slik    Forever And Ever

Tipped to be the next big thing but they struggled to follow up this
number 1. Good song and the first appearance on the charts of Midge Ure.

It's a good song but it's not what he wanted to do and I suppose it was
about the end of that sort of music being popular.

He would later launch his solo career with a cover of the record at
    number 33.

    Ha, good point.

    46. (NE) Osibisa    Sunshine Day

Good song. I doubt the band ever made much money as years later I did a
home visit to one of the band (I won't mention who it was) when I was
working as a Visiting Officer for the old DHSS. Quite sad really to see someone who had been on Top Of The Pops down on his luck.

And that's even before streaming was invented.

    47. (39) Ethna Campbell    The Old Rugged Cross

The record that spent 11 weeks in the Breakers Chart and then the same
    again in the top 50.

...And still didn't make the Top 30.
Interesting that despite the religious theme it also peaked after
    Christmas.

    STAR BREAKERS
b01 (NEW) THE WAY I WANT TO TOUCH YOU - Captain & Tennille (Chart Entry 24-Jan-1976 at No. 42)

    Bit saucy.

b02 (NEW) SOMETHING'S BEEN MAKING ME BLUE - Smokie

Petition for Blue to reform and do a song called 'Something's Been
    Making Me Smoky'.

b03 (NEW) BABY FACE - Wing & Prayer Fife & Drum Corps (Chart Entry 24-Jan-1976 at No. 30)

Petition for Babyface to do a song called...

b04 (b10) IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ME - Yvonne Fair (Chart Entry 24-Jan-1976
    at No. 47)

Surely the most dramatic song in the whole chart.

b05 (NEW) SQUEEZE BOX - Who (Chart Entry 24-Jan-1976 at No. 44)

    Possibly not about an accordion.

b06 (NEW) EIGHTEEN WITH A BULLET - Derrick Harriot (Trojan TR 7973)

I hadn't heard this version before but I like it.

b07 (NEW) LIES IN YOUR EYES - Sweet (Chart Entry 24-Jan-1976 at No. 39)

    Bit average.

    b08 (NEW) LADY - Supertramp

    The Lady and the Tramp?

    b10 (b02) LUMBERJACK SONG - Monty Python's Flying Circus

Seems strange in retrospect that this wasn't even a Top 50 hit.

I made a mistake on it being on its 7th week at the top. It was in fact
    its 8th week.

    6.   (5) Chubby Checker    Let's Twist Again/The Twist

The 60s revival was under way. Soon there would be a 1930s and 1940s
revival too and even the 1950s got a look in.

Is this the point where pop is old enough for nostalgia to be serious business?

I think it must have been because there were a lot of "best of" type
albums being released, often by half forgotten acts, in 1976 and 1977.

    18.  (3) Greg Lake    I Believe In Father Christmas

Almost a Christmas number 1 this is one of the best Christmas songs in
my opinion. The lyrics were written by Peter Sinfield who alos wrote
'The Land Of Make Believe' by Bucks Fizz. It seems he liked to write
songs with lyrics that could best be described as taking a cynical
    view of life.

Didn't he write for King Crimson too?

He did. And prior to forming Emmerson, Lake & Palmer, Greg Lake was lead
    singer of King Crimson.

    21. (25) Crispy And Company    Get It Together

I quite like this forgotten disco song.

Is it really only two minutes long?

I've not heard a version which is longer but by disco standards that is
    very short.

    b10 (b02) LUMBERJACK SONG - Monty Python's Flying Circus

Seems strange in retrospect that this wasn't even a Top 50 hit.

I think it hung around the Breakers chart for a while though.
