From Chris Brown@21:1/5 to All on Sun Jun 20 16:24:59 2021
I had a dream last night that I would feature a chart from 1999 and lo, it has come to pass. I remember most of these except the trance ones.

Playlists are here. I didn’t put the duplicate AtB track on both times. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLdiUvgvgpgNrur46EU9VzLw_sWo7JOXyz https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5dyF1Y7qCD9YusL3SUievY?si=lvZdLJnOQFqnCT49WnPHYA&utm_source=copy-link&dl_branch=1

A surprisingly high number that I know, from a 1999 chart!

They are mainly the sort of songs that featured on MTV Dance...

    Chart dated 26th June 1999

I have mixed memories, or lack of them, of this. I had, at the time,
fairly recently upgraded my car and got one with a CD player in it, so I
was listening much less to the radio than previously. But I'd also got
Sky installed, and was watching the music channels (specifically, Q), so
I was stil hearing new stuff but via a different route and with a
different playlist. So whether I have strong memories of any particular
song depends a lot on where it was played and whether it was from an
artist that I would buy an album by.

Possibly a little unusually for a 90s chart, I've only seen one act in
here play live, and I have no interesting anecdotes about any of them.

    1. (NE) Vengaboys - Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!!

For some bizarre reason, I foubnd myself looking up Vengaboys on
    Wikipedia the other day.

The lyrics of this song sound like the text of a typical porn spam
    email.

    2. (1) S Club 7 - Bring It All Back

I don't have many memories of this. Fortunately.

    3. (NE) Britney Spears - Sometimes

    I suppose she's topical.

    4. (2) Madonna - Beautiful Stranger

Good song. This was from her collaboration with William Orbit, and
sounds a lot like the Ray of Light album, which is one of my favourites.

    5. (NE) Adam Rickitt - I Breathe Again

    Don't really remember this.

    6. (4) Shania Twain - That Don't Impress Me Much

This was a staple of Q.

    7. (3) Baz Luhrmann - Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)

A the time, this was a great song. Or, rather, monologue set to music.
I'm not sure it has aged that well, though.

    8. (5) Shanks & Bigfoot - Sweet Like Chocolate

    Classic of the era.

    9. (NE) *N Sync - Tearin' Up My Heart

    Meh.

    10. (6) The Chemical Brothers - Hey Boy Hey Girl

Great song. Classic of the era.

    11. (7) Cartoons - Doodah!

Not a classic of any era.

    12. (8) Backstreet Boys - I Want It That Way

I can't hear this song without my mind slipping off into the Al Yankovic
    parody of it.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKtlK7sn0JQ

    13. (NE) Aerosmith - Pink

Apparently I can't watch this song on Youtube without verifying my age.
    What the actual...?

This was a staple on Q as well.

    14. (10) Sixpence None The Richer - Kiss Me

    Good song.

    18. (13) Chicane ft Maire Brennan - Saltwater

    Very much of its era.

    26. (18) Red Hot Chili Peppers - Scar Tissue

Very much a Q staple at the time. Also currently a regular on the
    Absolute Radio iPod.

    30. (25) New Radicals - You Get What You Give

A staple of 90s compilation albums. And deservedly so.

    35. (26) Supergrass - Pumping On Your Stereo

This seems to crop up on Absolute Radio quite often as well.

    42. (34) the Supertroupers - Thank Abba For The Music

That reminds me, I've always fancied seeing Bjorn Again play live.
Speaking of which, this has got to be one of the best recursively
    referential musical jokes ever:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNBZQ_uQQBU

    47. (55) AtB - 9pm (Till I Come) {German import}

Good song. Classic of the era, even. Why was it charting twice as an
    import?

    55. (52) Fatboy Slim - Right Here Right Now

    Classic song, classic video.

    66. (44) Travis - Driftwood

Rather bizarrely, I heard this on the in-store playlist in Morrisons the
other day. Which is a bit odd, really. It's a nice song, but it wasn't a
massiv hit at the time and has been considerably overshadowed by their
    later singles.

    70. (51) Mr. Oizo - Flat Beat

    Very much of its era.

    76. (63) AtB - 9pm (Till I Come) {Australian Import}

Good song. Classic of the era, even. Why was it charting twice as an
import? Why am I getting a strange feeling of deja vu?

    92. (82) Robbie Williams - No Regrets/Antmusic
    94. (NE) Dog Eat Dog - Expect The Unexpected

A vaguely amusing juxtaposition here, with Robbie covering a song by
Adam and the Ants closely followed by a band which chares their name
with a song by Adam and the Ants.

    100. (RE) Cher - Believe

Do you believe in chart re-entry after number one?

    Mark
