• Through the hourglass I saw an old chart from 1986

From Chris Brown@21:1/5 to All on Sun Nov 15 17:21:47 2020
I already had this in the schedule when I woke up to the news that Des
O'Connor had died, but it seems apt to have a tribute to him. It helps
make up for some of the over-familar stuff higher up the chart
Otherwise the chart is perhaps most notable for TV themes and tie-ins,
and several big stars with underperforming singles.

Playlists are here. While searching I found a live version of one of the
songs dated "21.11.20" which seems doubly unlikely.
Madness are IMO the most disappointing omission from Spotify https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLdiUvgvgpgNrevbNsBfl14v3N0SFRpmO_ https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5W869YmyOUYiMRZllbMaqG?si=75r5l4hbQl-nO1Nw3MR_6g

    I remember this many.

    Chart dated 15th November 1986

    8. (20) Spandau Ballet Through The Barricades

Hadleigh rates this as his favourite vocal performance. I'm struggling to think of a better one he did.

    12. (7) Duran Duran Notorious

You can't mistake that guitar 'chop'!

    16. (12) Letitia Dean And Paul Medford Something Outta Nothing

Badly levered into an implausible East Enders storyline

    29. (18) Pet Shop Boys Suburbia

From the era where almost all their songs were lyrically near perfect,
without an ounce of spare on them.

    A superb describer of scenes.

    38. (NE) We've Got A Fuzzbox And We're Gonna Use It Love Is The Slug

They managed a few top 20s under a shortened name at the back end of the 80s

    39. (34) Marti Webb And The Simon May Orchestra Always There

Howard's Way with words. ('Bloody Dallas on water' as my late mother used
to call it.) I always associate this with the arse end of Sundays when
you're mentally hoping the clock stops!

    40. (29) Catherine Stock To Have And To Hold

Mike Stock's sister? TV theme, song mediocre, but tv series apparently
    worse!

    46. (53) Roger Whittaker And Des O'Connor The Skye Boat Song

I always found his whistling eerie.

    61. (NE) Phil Fearon Ain't Nothing But A Houseparty

Digging in the memory banks, future husband of the singer from Baby D?

    66. (78) Oran "Juice" Jones The Rain

Still sounds fresh (sorry terrible pun) even now, he didn't have many other hits if I remember rightly?

    90. (84) Queen Who Wants To Live Forever

Highlander first showing on the telly at a wild guess?

He did have almost two years to practice this one! Joking aside, yes a

Yes, one of those awful programmes that would crop up on BBC1 on a
Sunday evening and which signalled that the weekend was almost over and
it was time for work again the next morning.

That said, this time in 1986 (to the very day in fact, first episode was
16 November 1986) BBC1 broadcast the excellent The Singing Detective mini-series, written by the late Dennis Potter. That was Sunday evening
    TV at its best.

    40. (29) Catherine Stock To Have And To Hold

Mike Stock's sister?  TV theme, song mediocre, but tv series apparently worse!

Catherine is indeed Mike Stock's sister. I had to look that one up
though. It also says she died in 2004.

    46. (53) Roger Whittaker And Des O'Connor The Skye Boat Song

I always found his whistling eerie.

I remember them being on Top Of The Pops in what was a quite surreal performance given it was 1986. To add the strangeness of it all Roger
and Des were followed by Iron Maiden.

    61. (NE) Phil Fearon Ain't Nothing But A Houseparty

Digging in the memory banks, future husband of the singer from Baby D?

    Yup.

    66. (78) Oran "Juice" Jones The Rain

Still sounds fresh (sorry terrible pun) even now, he didn't have many
other hits if I remember rightly?

This was his only hit both here and on the Hot 100 in the US.

    90. (84) Queen Who Wants To Live Forever

Highlander first showing on the telly at a wild guess?

The film had its cinematic release in 1986.

I remember Dennis Potter plays being the sort of things my parents

I remember listening to the Pennies From Heaven soundtrack as well.

I just remembered that Sean Connery was in Highlander so this chart is a

Yep. It's really the last one of theirs I remember (excluding reunion activity). Apparently there's yet another hits collection coming soon.

Catherine is indeed Mike Stock's sister. I had to look that one up
though. It also says she died in 2004.

The clip I used for the YouTube playlist seems to have been uploaded by
    another sibling.

    I know what you mean.

I wonder whether anyone (other than collectors) actually bought both.

I think it had been earlier in the year so by this point I suspect it
was mainly being released to promote the Queen album.
