• When an old chart from 1989 sings again

From Chris Brown@21:1/5 to All on Sun Feb 21 12:05:18 2021
You'll have to gloss over the terrible song at the top of the chart, but
there is some decent stuff in the rest of it and there's a reissued
Supremes track which is my excuse for posting it. Two significant
singles from SAW's history make there debuts and it wouldn't be a
late-80s chart without at least a couple of remixed oldies and there are
some cartoon rabbits too but don't worry, not *that* one.

    1. (2) Simple Minds Belfast Child

    Long. Deep. Damn good.

    3. (1) Marc Almond ft Gene Pitney Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart

Died in the Cardiff hotel where I tried - unsuccessfully - to blag my way
into Oasis' pre-gig space in 1996. The dead half of the duo, clearly...

    16. (18) Hue And Cry Looking For Linda

Apparently about a legendary local character

    17. (10) Robert Howard & Kym Mazelle Wait

Kym Mazelle has miserably little chart success to her name for such a
fantastic talent. Howard is not a bad vocalist, but she makes him look ordinary without effort.

    23. (13) Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine Can't Stay Away From You

One of their last hits before the walls came tumbling down (sorry...)

    28. (NE) Dusty Springfield Nothing Has Been Proved

One of the last hits for the ultimate perfectionist, apparently she didn't
get past the Man in Mandy - the opening word - before wanting to redo it.

    35. (34) Debbie Gibson Lost In Your Eyes

She was insanely big in the states for a year or so, and decently well known here

    41. (31) Raze Break 4 Love

This seemed to hang around the lower reaches for ages, and have a couple of trips into the charts

    44. (NE) Reynolds Girls I'd Rather Jack

Lyrically quite interesting but not a lot of depth to the project

    54. (36) Boy Meets Girl Waiting For A Star To Fall

Apparently they only recorded this because they couldn't sell it!

    60. (72) The Bangles Eternal Flame

From 'Aspects Of Love' if I recall. Not my thing.

    3.   (1) Marc Almond ft Gene Pitney    Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart

A good bit of fun. I don't think this was meant to be taken as a serious
    duet.

    4.  (NE) Michael Jackson    Leave Me Alone

From the CD only version of 'Bad' I believe. That meant many of his
fans didn't own it hence the high new entry.

    5.  (17) Sam Brown    Stop {1989 reissue}

A lovely song by a woman with a good voice. I belkieve she's had to stop singing though due to an ongoing problem with her vocal chords.

    6.   (6) Bobby Brown    My Prerogative

    Very monotonous song.

    7.   (4) Mike + The Mechanics    The Living Years

    Good lyrics, sad song.

    8.   (5) Holly Johnson    Love Train

Hos solo career wasn't up to that much. Quite a dull song.

    9.   (9) Yazz    Fine Time

    Good song.

    10. (11) Rick Astley    Hold Me In Your Arms

I think he was going through the motions by this point, something he
    would probably agree with.

    11.  (7) Roy Orbison    You Got It

Sadly he never lived to see his renewed success.

    12. (NE) Bananarama And Lananeeneenoonoo    Help!

I suppose it was for charity...

    13. (21) Texas    I Don't Want A Lover

A decent song but they followed it up with some very dull songs.

    14. (29) S-Express    Hey Music Lover

OK but not the most inspiring dance track.

    15. (20) Def Leppard    Rocket

Very dull and generic rock music.

    16. (18) Hue And Cry    Looking For Linda

I don't mind some of their songs but they never bettered 'Labour Of Love'.

    17. (10) Robert Howard & Kym Mazelle    Wait

    An enjoyable dance oriented track.

    18. (16) Samantha Fox    I Only Wanna Be With You

She was surprisingly successful in the US.

    19. (13) Ten City    That's The Way Love Is

    Decent song.

    20. (24) Poison    Every Rose Has Its Thorn

This was the year when a lot of US rock bands started to do well in the
UK. OK song but it goes on a bit.

    28. (NE) Dusty Springfield    Nothing Has Been Proved

A great atmospheric song by Dusty and the Pet Shop Boys. 'Please Please
Me' definitely was number 1 as far as most people in the 60s were concerned.

    42. (NE) Donna Summer    This Time I Know It's For Real
    44. (NE) Reynolds Girls    I'd Rather Jack

1988 to bid for a legal radio station licence (Kiss won the licence).
The Government had promised if they wanted to bid for the licence and

Even the 7" edit is over 5 minutes.

    2.   (3) Michael Ball    Love Changes Everything

From 'Aspects Of Love' if I recall.

That is right, I particularly remember this because at school we had a
chapter in RE called "Aspects Of Spring" and someone started singing
    "Spring, spring changes everything..."

    Not my thing.

Not really mine either but I suppose I can see the skill that goes into it.

    3.   (1) Marc Almond ft Gene Pitney    Something's Gotten Hold Of My
    Heart

A good bit of fun. I don't think this was meant to be taken as a serious duet.

No, it was very camp, not that I fully got that at the time.

    4.  (NE) Michael Jackson    Leave Me Alone

From the CD only version of 'Bad' I believe.

This is true, as I know because it was the first CD we ever had.
I went on to Discogs to check it wasn't on the cassette and discovered
there was an 8-track in the US! https://www.discogs.com/Michael-Jackson-Bad/release/9792214

    That meant many of his
fans didn't own it hence the high new entry.

    That was my theory too.

    5.  (17) Sam Brown    Stop {1989 reissue}

A lovely song by a woman with a good voice. I belkieve she's had to stop singing though due to an ongoing problem with her vocal chords.

Sadly so. I think her last vocal on a hit was was the reworked version
    of 'My Sweet Lord'.

    6.   (6) Bobby Brown    My Prerogative

    Very monotonous song.

    Britney's version is even worse.

    7.   (4) Mike + The Mechanics    The Living Years

    Good lyrics, sad song.

Not one I've ever been fond of, I suppose I can understand why people
    like it.

    8.   (5) Holly Johnson    Love Train

Hos solo career wasn't up to that much. Quite a dull song.

I suppose it is quite catchy but it doesn't have the same sensation as
    the Frankie stuff.

    9.   (9) Yazz    Fine Time

    Good song.

I think it might be her best single.

    10. (11) Rick Astley    Hold Me In Your Arms

I think he was going through the motions by this point, something he
    would probably agree with.

    Yep.

    11.  (7) Roy Orbison    You Got It

Sadly he never lived to see his renewed success.
    He wasn't a lucky man.

    12. (NE) Bananarama And Lananeeneenoonoo    Help!

I suppose it was for charity...

...And it's probably the best hit to feature Kathy Burke.

    13. (21) Texas    I Don't Want A Lover

A decent song but they followed it up with some very dull songs.

They did struggle to build on this success for a while.

    14. (29) S-Express    Hey Music Lover

OK but not the most inspiring dance track.

There should be a joke about 'Hey Music Lover' being next to 'I Don't
    Want A Lover'.

    15. (20) Def Leppard    Rocket

Very dull and generic rock music.

And another 1989 single from a 1987 album.

    16. (18) Hue And Cry    Looking For Linda

I don't mind some of their songs but they never bettered 'Labour Of Love'.

I would probably agree with that.

    17. (10) Robert Howard & Kym Mazelle    Wait

    An enjoyable dance oriented track.

    Yep.

    18. (16) Samantha Fox    I Only Wanna Be With You

She was surprisingly successful in the US.

Where she wouldn't have been a pre-existing celebrity, as far as I know.
I don't know whether this was released to tie-in with the Brits.

    19. (13) Ten City    That's The Way Love Is

    Decent song.

Yes, this might be my favourite dance track here.

    20. (24) Poison    Every Rose Has Its Thorn

This was the year when a lot of US rock bands started to do well in the
    UK.

And then a load of British bands started doing the same thing.

OK song but it goes on a bit.

It's pretty much a country song isn't it? It even mentions cowboys.

    28. (NE) Dusty Springfield    Nothing Has Been Proved

A great atmospheric song by Dusty and the Pet Shop Boys. 'Please Please
Me' definitely was number 1 as far as most people in the 60s were
    concerned.

You can almost see Neil Tennant winking there.

    42. (NE) Donna Summer    This Time I Know It's For Real
    44. (NE) Reynolds Girls    I'd Rather Jack

From the sublime to the ridiculous.

Almost opposite ends of the SAW spectrum.

    60. (72) The Bangles    Eternal Flame

Slowly edging its way to number 1.

They must have believed it was meant to be.

    63. (NE) Fuzzbox    International Rescue

It's a silly song but a very enjoyable one too.

I wonder whether this would be more difficult to do nowadays with
intellectual property being more strictly enforced.

    70. (80) Julia Fordham    Where Does The Time Go?

This was a big radio hit but struggled oin the charts. Julia Fordham was tipped as the next big female singer but ultimately her music was just
    too bland.

She's still around, I presume she has her audience.

    76. (62) Diana Ross And The Supremes    Stop! In The Name Of Love

    A remix or the original?

The original (albeit in stereo) reissued to promote the snappily-titled
"Love Supreme: The Very Best Of The Supremes Featuring Diana Ross".
Despite that (and the credit on the single) there were some tracks by
    the post-Ross Supremes on there.

    82. (86) Longsy D    This is Ska

Much played on London pirate radio stations in 1989. Or at least the

Did any of the ones who didn't get it come back?

    I suppose it is well-meaning.

    3.   (1) Marc Almond ft Gene Pitney Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart

Died in the Cardiff hotel where I tried - unsuccessfully - to blag my
way into Oasis' pre-gig space in 1996.  The dead half of the duo,
    clearly...

Yes, I know Marc Almond almost died once, but I don't think that was in Cardiff.

    16. (18) Hue And Cry Looking For Linda

Apparently about a legendary local character

Did Hue or Cry ever actually kiss her?

    17. (10) Robert Howard & Kym Mazelle Wait

Kym Mazelle has miserably little chart success to her name for such a fantastic talent.

I guess that's one of the lessons of pop, it's not enough to be a great
singer if you don't have the right material or promotion etc.

Howard is not a bad vocalist, but she makes him look
    ordinary without effort.

I don't know whether they considered working together further.

    23. (13) Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine Can't Stay Away From You
    {1989 reissue}

From the era when the drippy ballad to funky latino beat ratio started
to go in the wrong direction

Not sure this was worth releasing twice, even if they did have a picture
    disc this time.

    27. (32) The Style Council Promised Land

One of their last hits before the walls came tumbling down (sorry...)

Their last original single (well, it's a cover obviously but their later
    ones were reissues or remixes).

    28. (NE) Dusty Springfield Nothing Has Been Proved

One of the last hits for the ultimate perfectionist, apparently she
didn't get past the Man in Mandy - the opening word - before wanting to
    redo it.

This is why the famous Dusty In Memphis album is slightly misnamed, she
    didn't record the vocals there.

    35. (34) Debbie Gibson Lost In Your Eyes

She was insanely big in the states for a year or so, and decently well
    known here

And still has her fans now.

    41. (31) Raze Break 4 Love

This seemed to hang around the lower reaches for ages, and have a couple
    of trips into the charts

Yes, indeed there was the reworked version in the 1990 chart I posted a
    couple of weeks ago.
I presume it was the sort of track that wouldn't get mainstream airplay.

    44. (NE) Reynolds Girls I'd Rather Jack

Lyrically quite interesting but not a lot of depth to the project

I don't get the impression Pete Waterman was interested in them as a
    long-term act.

    54. (36) Boy Meets Girl Waiting For A Star To Fall

Apparently they only recorded this because they couldn't sell it!

I believe Whitney Houston (or her management) rejected it.

    60. (72) The Bangles Eternal Flame

On one of the slowest ever climbs to no1

Even though they were already a well-known act.

    65. (56) Joe Smooth Promised Land

    See no27

Probably the better version. And another club hit with a long but low
    chart run.

    97. (NE) The Hollies Find Me A Family

Having notably less success with original material than with their
    recent reissue

Though possibly this would have done even worse otherwise?
It was apparently the theme tune to a TV show I don't remember so maybe
they wouldn't even have got that gig without the reissue.

Much played on London pirate radio stations in 1989. Or at least the
ones that were still on the air. A number had gone off air at the end
of 1988 to bid for a legal radio station licence (Kiss won the
licence). The Government had promised if they wanted to bid for the
licence and went off air before 1 January 1989 they would be
considered for the upcoming London dance radio station licence without
their previous illegal broadcasting status affecting their application.

Did any of the ones who didn't get it come back?

A couple returned in 1989 after being off air for a number of weeks,
presumably they just either didn't enter the bidding or gave it up and
decided to stay a pirate. LWR, one of the big pirate stations of the mid
to late 80s, announced it had decided not to bother applying for the
legal licence and said it would return on air in mid 1989 but never did. Instead a number of new pirates started broadcasting but I don't really remember any of them as I moved back to listening to pop radio and more
or less gave up listening to the pirates.

My Mum likes some real tripe, to be fair.

Seriously though I do understand that some people might appreciate it
but it's exactly the sort of thing that rubs me up the wrong way, and a
waste of a good folk tune.
