Nothing very topical here - BBC4 are of course repeating TotP from much
further into 1990 - but I think there should be at least one single in
here Paul likes. And we almost have Dionne and Dion together.

    1. (1) Sinead O'Connor Nothing Compares 2 U

Still makes the hairs prick up 30yrs on.

    5. (4) Mantronix ft Wondress Got To Have Your Love

Very into this at the time, but they didn't do much after it.

    8. (6) Halo James Could Have Told You So

Gorgeous vocals but another early 90s group that didn't capitalise on an
    early hit

    11. (15) Del Amitri Nothing Ever Happens

Remember Dad seeing this on TOTP - bloody hell a protest song!

    14. (7) New Kids On The Block Hangin' Tough {1990 reissue}

    Dull.

    15. (NE) Beats International ft Lindy Layton Dub Be Good To Me

About to be the first dub no1, still sounds really fresh, but Lindy didn't really have much of a career after this.

    20. (22) The House Of Love Shine On

From the 'Butterfly' album, superb bit of shoegaze indie throughout,
    regulars in Peel's Festive 50

    24. (36) The Beloved Hello

    Very lyrically clever

    32. (45) Rod Stewart Downtown Train

Not a bad track, he was seriously uncool by now but still having some decent hits.

    46. (35) Jason Donovan When You Come Back To Me

Proving that all you need to turn a track into an Xmas track is add some bells...

    49. (41) Happy Mondays Madchester Rave On (EP)

    50. (42) Madonna Dear Jessie

This was a hit in summer 89 wasn't it, still hanging around? Or do I just associate it with summer because of the feel of the track?

    58. (47) The Stone Roses Sally Cinnamon

See 65... 2 of my favourite Roses songs in the same chart!

    64. (49) Electronic Getting Away With It

Gorgeous, soaring blend of 2 outstanding vocalists.

    65. (51) The Stone Roses Fool's Gold/What The World Is Waiting For

    81. (NE) Barry Manilow If I Can Dream

Didn't realise he was still doing singles, thought he was all-albums at this time.

    84. (72) Gwen Dickey Car Wash

Why did she re-release a song that she'd been lead singer of in a group?
Rights issues for an advert or something like that?

    98. (80) Jive Bunny And The Mastermixers Let's Party

Not normally heard in the original form due to the presence of non-Christmas Glitter...

    Chart dated: 10th Feb 1990

    1.   (1) Sinead O'Connor Nothing Compares 2 U

Still makes the hairs prick up 30yrs on.

Ironic, given her famously shaven head at the time.

    5.   (4) Mantronix ft Wondress Got To Have Your Love

Very into this at the time, but they didn't do much after it.

I was a bit surprised to learn they had another Top 10 hit after this,
    as it's so rarely mentioned.

    8.   (6) Halo James Could Have Told You So

Gorgeous vocals but another early 90s group that didn't capitalise on an early hit

I mainly associate this with Capital doing an "expose" of how many
formats had been released. Perhaps the fans couldn't afford to buy any
    more singles after this one?

    11. (15) Del Amitri Nothing Ever Happens

Remember Dad seeing this on TOTP - bloody hell a protest song!

I bet they were glad someone noticed.

    14.  (7) New Kids On The Block Hangin' Tough {1990 reissue}

    Dull.

They promise us a "funky" song. So clearly not this one.

    15. (NE) Beats International ft Lindy Layton Dub Be Good To Me

About to be the first dub no1,

    Is it the only one?

still sounds really fresh, but Lindy
didn't really have much of a career after this.

I suppose she may not have been that bothered. I heard some tracks by
her later band Hardknox which are not exactly commercial.

    20. (22) The House Of Love Shine On

    From the 'Butterfly' album,

Is that the same one they call the "Fontana" album?
It's a bit of confusing discography with the untitled albums and the
    multiple re-recordings of this song.

superb bit of shoegaze indie throughout,
    regulars in Peel's Festive 50

I think I actually prefer this more mainstream version though.

    24. (36) The Beloved Hello

    Very lyrically clever

The verses always seemed a bit of an afterthought.

    32. (45) Rod Stewart Downtown Train

Not a bad track, he was seriously uncool by now but still having some
    decent hits.

Yeah, I was thinking that with him and Eric Clapton next to each other
in this chart, at this point they were still considered to be mainstream
acts, having hits and appearing on he same radio playlists as Adamski
    and Lonnie Gordon.

    46. (35) Jason Donovan When You Come Back To Me

Proving that all you need to turn a track into an Xmas track is add some bells...

It's a kind of stealth Christmas song, with that and the line about
    "armfuls of presents".

    50. (42) Madonna Dear Jessie

This was a hit in summer 89 wasn't it, still hanging around?  Or do I
just associate it with summer because of the feel of the track?

Yep, single released in November 1989 (though obviously the album had
been out for a while) but you can see why it would be either a summer or
    a Christmas single really.

    58. (47) The Stone Roses Sally Cinnamon

See 65... 2 of my favourite Roses songs in the same chart!

Although the band famously didn't approve of this being reissued.

    64. (49) Electronic Getting Away With It

Gorgeous, soaring blend of 2 outstanding vocalists.

And a great guitarist. To be fair, Johnny Marr can sing as well, but understandably not as well as the people who do on this one.

    65. (51) The Stone Roses Fool's Gold/What The World Is Waiting For

Start of the year where they were to be a dominant act.

Despite not releasing much new material.

    81. (NE) Barry Manilow If I Can Dream

Didn't realise he was still doing singles, thought he was all-albums at
    this time.

Well, it was only Number 81!
At this point a lot of "heritage" acts would still have to release
singles to promote their albums even if they didn't expect the singles themselves to be hits. His only Top 40 hits in the 90s were re-releases
    though.

    84. (72) Gwen Dickey Car Wash

Why did she re-release a song that she'd been lead singer of in a group? Rights issues for an advert or something like that?

Surely a rights thing, it looks like there are some remixes of this so I
guess they weren't able to clear the original. She doesn't seem to have released a solo album at this time.

Confusingly, the original version was later re-released credited to
    "Rose Royce featuring Gwen Dickey".

    98. (80) Jive Bunny And The Mastermixers Let's Party

Not normally heard in the original form due to the presence of
    non-Christmas Glitter...

Yes I believe the version now on Spotify is the reworked one but I
couldn't be bothered to listen to it.

    reference now!

    50. (42) Madonna Dear Jessie

This was a hit in summer 89 wasn't it, still hanging around?  Or do I
just associate it with summer because of the feel of the track?

Yep, single released in November 1989 (though obviously the album had
been out for a while) but you can see why it would be either a summer
    or a Christmas single really.

I don't know why I associate it with summer.

Possibly because it mentions a sunny day in the chorus.

    98. (80) Jive Bunny And The Mastermixers Let's Party

Not normally heard in the original form due to the presence of
    non-Christmas Glitter...

Yes I believe the version now on Spotify is the reworked one but I
couldn't be bothered to listen to it.

    Don't blame you!

It's hard work even at Christmas, let alone February.

    Chris
