• Rochdale child abuse scandal

From The Todal@21:1/5 to All on Mon Jan 15 13:25:50 2024
Many newspaper reports today and a press conference televised on the BBC
in which several campaigners urged us all to read the full report and
    read it carefully.

I've tried, so far without success, to find a website where it can be downloaded. Has anyone had better luck? There are of course many
downloadable reports that were issued years ago. One important point
made by Sara Rowbotham and Maggie Oliver is that for all the complacent assurances that lessons have been learned and these children would get
far better protection today, actually that's just lies. The fundamental systemic failings still remain, it is said.

The various systems that are set up to explore major issues seem to be
designed to kick the ‘problem’ of the day well into the long grass so that senior people can retire and escape censure. This approach works so well
that I don’t see anything changing. After all, what do subpostmasters and underage lower-class vulnerable girls matter when promotion, big bonuses,
plush management suites, and gongs are at hand?

Good luck finding a copy of the report.

Ah, well done. Maybe there was a delay before it was uploaded to a
public resource. I will read it.

In a way it's a pity that this might now overshadow the Post Office
scandal, since the media generally focus on one scandal at a time.

But one valid point that was made in the press conference was that many
of the police officers and other decision makers who neglected their
duty to these abused children, refused to give evidence to the
Independent Assurance Review thereby protecting their own careers at the expense of helping to improve the procedures and systems that are
supposed to protect children. And that is rather shameful.

A wider scandal I was aware of (because of local connections) in
Rochdale in the late 70's was a combination of "latchkey children"
who weren't actually given the key, but told to leave the house to
go to school and not come back until sunset, with no meal prepared; and
a persistent rumour that many young girls lost their virginity to their
[WASP] father, after getting home from a session in the pub one Friday
    or Saturday night.

The AAIB has an emphasis on finding the cause of accidents, without a
lot of emphasis on blaming individuals. Are you perhaps saying that it
is shameful that the Rochdale review didn't take the same
    non-judgemental approach?

I would hate to think that those poor children are being exploited all
over again but it doesn't seem beyond the bounds of possibility that
the report has been brought forward/dragged from out of the long grass precisely to act as a distraction from the Post Office. I tried, unsuccessfully, to find out when the report had been due to be
published and all I really found was that all the previous ones had
had to be dragged kicking and screaming into the light.

But one valid point that was made in the press conference was that many

Worse still are statements by campaigners (Maggie Oliver, etc) who claim
almost identical abuse continues in the present day but the police don't
    take notice of their reports.

Admittedly campaigners can be notorious for over-egging their demands
but this seems unlikely to be one of those occasions.
