• Google Groups ending support for Usenet

From Sir Tim@21:1/5 to All on Sat Dec 16 21:50:15 2023
Starting on February 22, 2024, you can no longer use Google Groups (at groups.google.com) to post content to Usenet groups, subscribe to Usenet groups, or view new Usenet content. You can continue to view and search for historical Usenet content posted before February 22, 2024 on Google Groups.

I wonder if many here use Google Groups?

I bet a lot of readers believe that this group, uk.legal.moderated, is a
Google group. It isn't, of course. And the moderators therefore have no
power to delete posts or threads that appear in the Google version of
    this group.

I guess anyone who accesses the group via Google Groups will have to
consider using Usenet. Make use of a newsreader such as Thunderbird
(others are available) and subscribe to our group that way.

For writing, I haven't noticed* any in this group.

[*] I have rules that selectively kill posts from googlegroups, but tag
the results, so I know what the rules have done.

I can vouch for Thunderbird after you recommended this platform to me
currently sat on a Windows 10 operating system a few years so thank you
    Y Todal.

After setting my preferences, it has worked totally trouble free in that
    time.

    Thank you.

I use Google Groups for reading and posting. I used to use Turnpike,
so I am aware there are "proper" newsreaders. I had a look at
Thunderbird, but it seemed pretty clunky to me, Google Groups seems
    much better for my purposes.

Ah yes, I have a "stop filters" rule with higher priority in moderated
groups, that's why I don't see any posts being killed here

    Unfortunately it doesn't carry u.l.m

I'm not sure if that's because nobody has requested it (the owner is
open to requests) or because it can't handle moderated groups ...

So messages posted after February 2024 will not be searchable.

Maybe somebody will step in and provide that service. If you ignore the bianries, Usenet traffic is probably quite modest these days.

*very* I would say (uk.legal is rare in having quite heavy traffic).

FWIW I use Thunderbird on PC and NewsTap on iPad.

    My news server is:

    http://news.individual.net/

(10 euros p.a. and very reliable)

On the one hand, this is very good news for those of us forced to suffer the technical ineptitude of Google Groups.

On the other hand, it means that DejaNews is officially dead and buried,
    which is very bad news.

I'd prefer it if they simply switched off posting, but continued to collect
and store the archive. But I suppose that doesn't make sufficient financial sense for them.
