• How do they get away with this?

From Andy Smith@21:1/5 to All on Thu Nov 2 16:44:21 2023
This has been going on for years but this particular example has moved
me to finally put finger to keyboard.

I'm talking about television adverts where the thing being advertised
    doesn't even exist.

Adverts for computer games will often have a rider at the bottom of the
screen saying something like "Not actual game footage".

Car adverts will sometimes state "Car shown not to UK spec".

The one that has finally tipped me over the edge is the latest advert
for the Toyota C-HR that blatantly states something to the effect of
"Car shown is a concept car and is not available to purchase"

    WHAT???

Why is the Advertising Standards Agency allowing this to happen?

    Where's the problem ? It's clear that it's not for sale . It's a
'concept' car and the advert is designed to appeal to your taste buds
that this is an exciting new car that might be available to buy in the
    future.

Irrespective of the fact that this is a "concept car" which doesn't
actually exist, almost all advertising is actually pushing a "concept"
    - what this product will do for you. Not the product itself. This was encapsulated in Elmer Wheeler's famous quote "Sell the sizzle not the
    steak".

I can only assume you haven't noticed that in *every single car
advertisement* there is never another car on the road - not only
no traffic or traffic jams- but no other cars at all !

This is what buying this latest model will do for you ! All the
other cars on the road will simply disappear, and you'll be mainly
driving on scenic roads by the sea, from now on.

What do you think the problem is? There can’t possibly be a claim of mis-selling
