Have you tried your Apple App Store?

Yes and it won't download because you need the latest OS for it.
The app store doesn't seem to keep old versions, and also the numbering system for iMovie seems a little strange

They won't be interested, they don't like supporting Macs , maybe I could get a basic macbook air if it were for research,

The only reason I have this mac is because it's an ex research machine and no one else wanted it.

Yes my only purchased apps are blackmagic disk speed check, mactracker and keynote.

There are other apps I can;t run due to the 'no entry sign' on them.

but I haven;t tried updating them as I don;t really need them yet or not sure I will in the near future .

That's what I see, when I click on open nothing happens.

    I have iMovie 10.0.5 5 sept. 2014

but it has that no entry type sign which means it's not compatable with >>>>>>> my catalina 10.15.7
I have no idea why you are using an old macOS

Because this old iMac won't update further than catalina as far as I can tell.
    It's my work one
    iMac (27-inch, Late 2012)
    3.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
    16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
My suggestion is to explain to your employer that you have a need to
    update your hardware!

They won't be interested, they don't like supporting Macs , maybe I
could get a basic macbook air if it were for research,
but the screen to small and I'm in the teachinglabs . The college
policy is that we have a contract with Dell for teaching and that is
    it.
The only reason I have this mac is because it's an ex research machine
and no one else wanted it.

    Your product is officially OBSOLETE!
    https://www.macrumors.com/guide/vintage-and-obsolete/

    Yeah I know.

    Did you try this? https://apple-imovie.en.softonic.com/mac

No and it;s the same one apple are offering up anyway, why go to a 3rd party ?
I'd not use that either. FWIW, MY version of iMovie is 10.3.5

Not sure what my version at home is , will check tonight I had planned
to copy my home version to this work mac to see what happens but I
    forgot
    to do it.
Seems the the last version supported by Catalina is 10.2.5. You've done
the whole App Store thing (clicking on your name (bottom left I think)?

Yes my only purchased apps are blackmagic disk speed check, mactracker
    and keynote.

There are other apps I can;t run due to the 'no entry sign' on them.

but I haven;t tried updating them as I don;t really need them yet or
not sure I will in the near future .

Have you tried your Apple App Store?

Yes and it won't download because you need the latest OS for it. >>>>>>>>> The app store doesn't seem to keep old versions, and also the numbering
system for iMovie seems a little strange
Please provide a screenshot of what you see on your screen when you have
carried out a search for iMovie on the Apple App store.
