• Getting iWork apps for Monteray for the first time

From Ian McCall@21:1/5 to All on Mon Dec 26 21:27:08 2022
Situation: New-to-them iMac, freshly upgraded to Monterey. They’re new to Macs, so have never got any of the artist-formerly-known-as-iWork apps for
it. How can they purchase it? The App Store just shows the latest versions which require Ventura, and of course it’s not in their purchase history because they never purchased it. They do have iOS versions, but not these.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers,
    Ian

That won't run under Monterey, will it?

Ah.. good point - Maximum OS is... Tiger 10.4.10.

I had it back in the day and now have the new versions on Catalina - I
vaguely remember a few years ago.. getting the updated versions from the
App store via a link to "Previous purchases" - in the App store - and it
is still working fine. I believe Apple in their wisdom removed that
    option a few years back.

There were lots of posts on various Fora (MacRumors, Reddit, etc)
describing various ways of still doing it post that change. If you
Google about in those there may be solutions.

Why not just upgrade them to Ventura?

I'd guess the hardware is too old to run Ventura?

Are we actually talking about iWork '09, or do you mean the current Pages/Numbers/Keynote/etc?

When I got a 2013 MBP it came with them preinstalled. I wonder if there's a route by which you can install the factory OS image (on mine it was
Mavericks) which maybe comes with the apps. And then upgrade to Monterey (possibly via intermediate OSes) and see if they stick around. Signing into the appstore may help.

Alternatively, a shortcut would be to install the factory OS, login to the
app store and do any available updates from there. Then boot back into Monterey and see if they now show in your appstore 'purchases'.

(given HFS+ and APFS I think you'd have to wipe the machine and start again with Mavericks, as it won't install on an APFS drive. But maybe you could install it to an external drive and leave Monterey on the internal storage)

Another option might be to use OCLP to boot Ventura (on external storage perhaps), 'purchase' the apps, and then boot back into Monterey. It might
be possible to transfer them across from the Ventura image if the appstore won't do it.

That’s right - it stops at Monterey.

Are we actually talking about iWork '09, or do you mean the current Pages/Numbers/Keynote/etc?

‘Current’, as in current generation but the latest versions that work on Monterey.

When I got a 2013 MBP it came with them preinstalled. I wonder if there's a route by which you can install the factory OS image (on mine it was Mavericks) which maybe comes with the apps. Unfortunately it won’t let you purchase them fresh. So I started with the original factory OS (err...Catalina? Not sure - this is a mid-2015 iMac) and went to the App Store to get them, but it wouldn’t allow me to get them.

Another option might be to use OCLP to boot Ventura (on external storage perhaps), 'purchase' the apps, and then boot back into Monterey. It might
be possible to transfer them across from the Ventura image if the appstore won't do it.

That’s not a bad idea. I looked at the whole unofficial firmware patcher to get Ventura working on the machine and was tempted to go for it, but really this machine won’t be used in a power user fashion so I think just sticking with the standard defaults wherever possible is good. But doing it on an external boot device would be completely fine. Will give that a try - thanks.

    Cheers,
    Ian

iWork '09 runs on Mojave but nothing later.

If anyone can find a way of making it run on later versions, please let me
know as iWork '09 is (for my needs) far superior to the current version.

iwork '09 is 32 bit, which can't run beyond mojave.

one option is a virtual machine of mojave (or earlier). another is
screen share to an older mac running same.

    https://github.com/cormiertyshawn895/Retroactive only takes iWork to
Mojave too, unllike the other apps, so I suspect missing OS frameworks
mean that after that you'll need a VM.

there's no reason why it wouldn't if the vm runs an earlier system,
ideally one from a decade ago, when iwork '09 was current. that's not
an option on apple silicon, but can work on intel.

if all you want to do is use iwork '09, an older version of mac os

that's bizarre. vms do not fully support the gpu and that's probably
why, except that nothing iwork does is graphics intensive, making it
surprising that would be the cause.

I agree. Bloody annoying, though, since the functionality of Pages and
