• youtoob throttled?

From Jim Lesurf@21:1/5 to All on Mon Nov 29 15:29:24 2021
I only rarely want to watch a youtube video, and when I do I've used youtube-dl. However when I just tried it for the first time in ages the fetching rate is sub-real-time. Updating didn't fix this. But the video
    came though OK eventually.

Have YT throttled access to cause this? And if so, is there a work-around,
or a fix that'll be made for an updated youtube-dl?

I also experienced that youtube-dl download at an extremely low speed,
    about 50KB/s.
It is not a fault at your side.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was YouTube itself which somehow
throttles the download. They are after all the self-appointed
    copyright police.

You could try using yt-dlp instead. I haven't used it yet, but
apparently it's a fork from youtube-dl and it doesn't have the throttle problem.

Apparently, YouTube changed their fetching algorithm sometime in early October, for which the app "4k Download" needed to update their program. This is what the "4k Download" people posted on 12 Oct:

"Guys, there are current issues with the speed of downloading videos from YouTube due to changes in the YouTube algorithm.
We are aware of the issue and are working on fixing this.
    Thank you for anderstanding"

A later release of "4k Download" did indeed fix it.
So maybe youtube-dl hasn't been similarly updated.

    Cheers

I'll have search for that! Thanks.

Having done some searching after my initial posting I've found some
references to 'aria2' as being a way to deal with the behaviour via making multiple parallel fetches. I'll see if I can find out more. Anyone here
    tried it?

    Thanks,

    I did a '-U' self-update of youtube-dl yesterday and it didn't fix the
problem. So I assume they haven't fixed this, at least by then. Nor did I
see any mention of the problem when I had a quick look at the github pages.

I've just tried using aria2c as an external downloaded for youtube-dl but didn't get it to work. I think the problem is that I've forgotten how
to nest one command with options into a command string for the other
    command that also has options!

I'll have a play to sort that and also try the 'dlp' version to see if
that's simpler and better from my POV.

I use it for fetching large installer downloads from sites on the Akamai
CDN. Each edge server on the CDN might have some limit based on its
bandwidth capability, but fetching multiple pieces of the file in parallel
hit different servers and so you reach the bottleneck of your internet connection, rather than the bottleneck of the server.

Being a CDN, the first fetch of a particular file often isn't so quick
because it has to be pulled across the CDN to the edge server nearest to
you, but then subsequent fetches are fast. This is useful when you're
pulling down the file to multiple machines, eg when deploying to multiple servers.

Never tried it on YT, but I see no reason why it wouldn't do the same there,
as I imagine their CDN works roughly similar to Akamai.

Yup! yt-dlp works like a magic charm. :-) Faster than I've seen from the previous youtube-dl even before the throttling!

    Thanks,

There are (were) mentions of it on the github for yt-dl, mostly people reporting it, it being linked to "existing report #nnnn", and someone
promoting a rival fork mentioned here (ydlp?) ... maybe the comments have been deleted since I saw them due to the tone of the comments ("youtube-dl is
dead abandonware, at least ydlp is maintained and growing") etc.

I have found this to be great at downloading, given that the internet does

Thanks, but yt-dlp seems perfect from my POV.

I got a copy and simply altered the ROXFiler app I wrote to call that
instread of youtube-dl. So an easy change for me to go on fetching items
via drag-and-drop of the video's webpage url. Faster than youtube-dl was
    before the throttling!
