• Indexing?

From Huge@21:1/5 to All on Tue Apr 18 20:08:50 2017
My wife's Windows 7 PC has an external disk plugged into it, as drive
R: (snigger), allocated as a backup device.

Several times a day, not at backup times, it spends a while (half an hour?) bashing the crap out of that disk. The only reason I can think of why is
that it is indexing it, but that disk is specifically excluded from
    indexing.

Any idea what's going on and how to stop it?

What's going on, Hugh, is that you've found one of the newsgroups that
is effectively moribund; they are so numerous, sigh.

uk.comp.homebuilt is about the only one (that I know of) with a
respectable signal:noise ratio and a good community of knowledgeable
people (of whom, in the case of Windows, I am not one, alas).

I suggest you post there; I think you'll be made welcome.

    Indeed. Sad, isn't it?

That's very kind, but I have sorted it. It turned out to be the Win7
defragging agent, which despite being told only to run on Wednesdays
at 1am, ran every time the machine was idle, even though the backup
disk doesn't need defragging. I've remove the external disk from its
defrag list and the problem seems to be solved.
