Google offers to attempt to unsubscribe you from an address you report
as Spam, by sending an Unsubscribe message. Is this not a sure-fire
way of telling the Sender that there is, in fact, somebody actually
at this address?

That's probably the case if they are indeed a spammer, but there are
also probably plenty of legitimate organisations that will act
properly on an unsubscribe request. Fortunately Gmail does quite a
good job of spotting and blocking spammers, so I don't think you need
to worry about it too much.
