A lot of those are scams, using outdated details from when it was
possible to harvest domain plus owner WHOIS records ...

I get regular reminders, apparently mandatory, that a domain I transferred
to somebody else 8-10 years ago is about to expire. The latest is from no-reply@mainnameserver.com which doesn't seem to exist.

I have no Domain Services Provider so there is nothing I can do.

Is there any way to stop them or shall I just bin them?

I get things like this, but they are genuine. Apparently, because I'm no longer the registrant, I can't tell them to take my email address off the record!

I was once told by a cat's home that they couldn't divulge the temporary name they'd assigned to an otherwise unknown cat that has been handed in deceased.

Sure you get genuine ones, but that's the basis for getting fake ones,
often a week or two before the genuine renewals ones are due, to
    increase the 'ring of truth'.

Sorry, that looks rude - I meant I will ignore the reminder emails!

The standard response should be "Oh, I must have missed that bit. Which section?" (of the act)
