• Most common variety of tiny connector used on wifi modules - IPEX?

From Jon Nicoll@21:1/5 to All on Sun Aug 11 17:36:31 2024
    Hi there
I have an old-ish fanless "PC" which is essentially an Intel
Motherboard with large passive heatsink, in a small custom case.
There is one PCI slot but insufficient height to use it, and no
backplane bracket etc. There are one (possibly two) mini-PCIe slots.

For various reasons I am thinking of adding Wifi to this unit.
So I am thinking of a mini-PCI card and running cable to a couple of
reverse SMA connectors that I can mount on the rear bulkhead.

You can get RP-SMA wifi cables via eBay but I am unsure about the usual
(tiny) connector use on wifi cards. Back in the day I remember buying
short pigtail cables and knew the types, bit it seems hard to find out
these days. I have seen "IPEX" mentioned but I don't know
is this is ubiquitous or not.

Would I have to first get my module and work out what the connector is,
or is IPEX likely to be the correct one for most, please?

    Thanks, J^n

I think that's the correct name.

    Hi Andy
It was more the compatibility that I was wondering about ... but
after a bit more digging, it seems like there are two or three
connectors (U.FL and AMC, for instance), but that IPEX are compatible
    with each.
