• upgrading a Apple Mac without needing an Apple ID?

From SH@21:1/5 to All on Sun Jun 2 21:57:49 2024
I have a Apple mac A1418 that is currently running MacOS Yosemite.

This can be upgraded to MacOS Catalina.

When I try to do this, it wants me to input my Apple ID or sign up for
    an Apple ID.

I do not wish to do this as I am selling the Apple Mac on, so I have
wiped the HDD, reinstalled Yosemite from the recovery partition. The
reason to then upgrade to Catalina is to make it more saleable.

So is there a way of upgrading to Catalina without all this Apple ID
    malarkey?

OS installers are 'special', and don't need an Apple ID. The App Store
does, but there are other ways...

There are tools to download the installer from Apple's servers, without
having to go via the App Store: https://github.com/scriptingosx/DownloadFullInstaller https://github.com/ninxsoft/Mist

or you may be able to get it from the MacOS command line: https://osxdaily.com/2020/04/13/how-download-full-macos-installer-terminal/
or via VM builder tools on other platforms: https://github.com/foxlet/macOS-Simple-KVM?tab=readme-ov-file#step-1

Catalina Patcher will also download it for you:
    https://dosdude1.com/catalina/
and once downloaded you can skip the 'patching' steps if your machine
    supports Catalina natively.

Once you have the .pkg or .dmg you can run that on the Mac and it should perform the install.
