• Upgrading Windows 11 Home to Pro

    From Frank@21:1/5 to All on Sat Jan 27 00:44:21 2024
    I've a new laptop that I need to upgrade from Windows 11 Home to 11 Pro.
    Is the process fairly simple? Can it be done without a reinstallation?

    Buy a home->pro key, e.g.

    <https://pckeys.uk/windows-10-home-to-professional-upgrade>

    Settings / System / Activation / Upgrade your Edition / Change Product Key

    no reinstallation required.

    Do you need to join a domain or is it something else?

    As simple as that? Just enter a Pro key? Presumably, it will download
    the extra/different files it needs?

    I'm more than surprised it's so simple. Thanks!

    OK, I use it all the time. Windows Home includes the client, Windows Pro
    has the server. You only nee Pro on the PC you are remoting TO

    In my case I remote from my laptops to my desktops so the desktops have Pro and the Laptops Home. Are you remoting in to the laptop or from it to something else?

    Back in the good old days of Windows NT all the files were there.
    The software just checked the licence to see which software should be made available.

    IIRC at the time it was client or server.

    I think it's something not too dissimilar. You go to 'add Windows features'
    to enable various things, which will download any necessary bits. Which features are available in that list depends on the licence you have. In
    other words, nothing magically happens when you change licence aside from various features being installable which weren't before. BICBW.

    Remote Desktop is certainly nice to use, but there is a free alternative which works on any version of Windows.

    I did try it once in my adventurous days :-)

    I found it didn't scale the screen very well, perhaps I should have
    another play...
